MAYBE ITS TIME FOR A NEW MAYOR, WINK

You need to "Silkynize" him. He'll change his mind.

Captain Morgan and his half-Brahma son/nephew (can't tell which) evidently decided to have a tiff yesterday, as they're both sporting bloodied combs, are muddied, and each is moseying around with one eye shut. Argh. Of course I can't catch them in the run to get a good look, so I'll wait until the rain starts and drives them into the coop, and then catch them, rinse them off with saline eyewash, and evaluate the situation. Stupid blasted roosters. It looks like it was a dominance thing, as the Captain is well-armed and could have easily killed the kid.

The baby duckehs are agents of the happy right now - they're so cute! These are more laid-back than the Rouen ducklings were. Only one of them goes buggy when I hold it - the others settle down immediately and begin nibbling my fingers or hair while making soft, contented little peeps.

Got room for one more New Yorker? I'm in Albany, the grandest city of the all (NOT). It is against the law to keep hens and roosters in the city, but I have decided that I want to hatch some chick purely for the fun of it. I just picked up a loaner incubator (a Little Giant Still-Air) from the Cornell Co-Op Ext. of Albany County (they loan them for free :) ) and I got 16 eggs from various breeds from a fellow BYC poster . I believe I have 8 black austalorp, 5 d'Uccle, 1 blue ameraucana, 1 leghorn, and 1 penedesenca. I will be doing a dry hatch, and I will add very little water if needed, I will check the air cell to determine that. If this hatch is successful I may have to do this again and again!
Hi blzzrdqueen, the laws are changing as more people become educated in raising chickens. Unfortunately there are many people who believe that neighbors with chickens will bring down the property values and end up by costing more money than the city can afford. Here's the link to the Albany chicken ordinance: http://alloveralbany.com/archive/2011/05/13/jennings-will-veto-albany-chicken-ordinance

I think Mayor Jennings explained himself very well for why he vetoed the ordinance because it did not address important concerns with allowing chickens. Here in Cohoes our city ordinance is very specific on what is and isn't allowed such as a ban on roosters and slaughtering of animals on the property. Unlike in rural areas because our neighbors are much closer in proximity we do need to have limits on what is and isn't allowed. I would love to have a rooster for my girls but I totally understand why they are banned. My neighbors would want to shoot me and the rooster if they were to hear the rooster's crow at 3 or 4 in the morning since my chicken coop is only 50 feet from my neighbors' bedroom window. Heck, my hens' egg laying song is sometimes enough to wake up my neighbors.

I think the laws will change eventually though. so hang in there.

Cheers,
Jay

actually I've been looking for a White Leghorn rooster for quite some time, my hens killed mine

but we are picking one up tomorrow in Nedrow which is closer for me. If that falls through I will let you know.

From Mexico, it is more direct to just continue down 81S to the Nedrow exit, but Marcellus wouldn't take you any extra time, really. It would mean getting off the exit before Nedrow and heading west on Seneca Tpk. to Marcellus (about 10-12 minutes).

Just let me know if the Nedrow roo doesn't pan out for you. Good luck and thanks for the response!

We try to be tolerant of everyones chicken habits .
Some Raise for meat to eat , Some for Pets , Some For Eggs , Some for all of the Above .
So I am guessing THey dont want them eaten

Hi Gramma,

Not sure if this was in response to my friend's "free roosters to good home" plea...!

If so, YES, you're right. She would really like to see them go to a good home as pets. I realize everyone's chicken agenda differs. For the other few roos, she did manage to find them good homes. I'm surprised, as there are so many looking for homes! She's patient, which is a good thing...I told her I'd try to help.

Your little chicks are just so cute! They love their foster mom, hmm?

Ugh - sorry about the roo smack down -- not good!

On a brighter note, I am in love with the ducklings just hearing about them. Maybe you should name the wiggy one, "Buggy", as you described!
