NY chicken lover!!!!

Today is gonna be a first for me. I have to give my Penny, one of my BCM pullets; shots starting today. Respiratory issues. Never given an injection, but the info here is top notch so I am confident I can. I just hope she doesn't "hate" me after these 2x a day for 5 days. I just got her and her flock mates two weeks ago, and they finally started to see me as the lady who does good things, like let them out and bring them treats, in the last few days....

So sorry to hear of everyone's difficulty's. :(
Glad to see jlaw that your little one is doing well :) Praying she will heal quickly.

Does anyone have suggestions on sheds or playhouses in the area that I could convert to a coop? Still deciding whether to build or buy, would like 12x12, because i imagine they will choose to stay inside most of the winter. (plus, I've heard of chicken math lol) but don't know if that is within the budget, gotta do it as inexpensively as I can and still have something decent for my flock. The tractor will be too small for them once the chicks can go outside too.
I wondered if maybe Amish built sheds would be less costly than say Home Depot? Don't know any sources off hand though. Any suggestions are really appreciated!

I hope you all enjoy what is supposed to be a warmer day finally!

New to having chickens, I have 12 three week old chicks. I got them 3 days old 4 different breeds. All are doing great, love having them around. I live upstate NY, Caroga Lake. Would love to meet other chicken peeps somewhat close to me.

Not sure where you are located, but there is one of the " Amish built sheds" places near me. The prices are same or more than home depot, but quality is also better. There were two of those sheds run through a farm equipment consignment auction last spring, but can't remember the price. I have seen a couple on Craig's list recently, so keep an eye on there under farm & garden. Think one was only $300, but then need to hire someone with the right stuff to move it.

Morning all! Hoping for another beautiful day today. Kinda chilly when I went out to release the beasts.

Glad to hear little girl is up and walking and getting better!

Rancher--sorry about the job. Something better will come along. Like the song says,"God is great, beer is good and people are crazy."

So yesterday I ended up swapping 4 chicks for two roos. The family that took the 3 silkie roos were having issues with 2 of them and being the kind person that I am, I offered to take them back in exchange for the chicks. Now I must find homes for these two silkie boys. Supposedly Gandolf went after the little boy and is aggressive. He has never and has not shown any aggression towards me and is easily handled by me. Elron is a sweet boy, not sure why he wasnt wanted. However, the boys are back and I will continue to work with them and find them new homes. Gandolfs disqualification is his gold leakage in his hackles. If anyone is interested in either one, they are blue bearded silkies, 8 months old from a good breeder in Pa. They were supposed to be girls but sexing silkies is impossible until they crow or lay! I have no room so they must go asap, otherwise its freezer camp, which I dont really want to do.

All the cheeps were out destroying the woods yesterday. Dh let them out while I was at work and when I came home it looked like a huge herd had torn up the woods. It was the terrorists. They certainly enjoyed the day yesterday. Everyone will be out again today and I will let the boys out as well to see how they behave with the others. The babies are growing fast and the heritage rir chicks look so different from the hatchery ones we got last year. On a good note, I am pretty sure that I have 3 hens and 1 rooster so thats good.

Hope everyone gets out and enjoys the day and indulges in some chicken therapy. Who needs drugs when you have chickens???

Yesterday, Alan let out all the girls and two of the guys (Papa Captain Morgan and one of the to-be-freezer-camped roos), and left the rest of the guys in the run so that they wouldn't be bugging the hens. They were out for a few hours, and did a very thorough job "raking" the leaves out from under the deck, along the house, and along the fences. It's hilarious - you could hire them out to clean out flower beds and so on. Papa popped out of the run when I let them out this morning, but he's easy to round up. All I have to do is shake a feed bucket and call to him, and he'll trot along very nicely after me and follow me into the coop looking for a treat. He's a good roo.
