Morning all! Another hot and humid day. Yuk. Dh put the little one down last night. Its always difficult when you have to end a life for whatever reason. At least its no longer suffering. We put the rir tots in the divas coop last night on their own smaller perch. All went well with that. This morning I go and open the pop door and just get back in the house when I hear the babies screaming. I look out the window and all the girls are outside except Betty. She was in the coop pecking at the tots. So I go back outside, close the pop door and open the door and fish her out of the coop and throw her outside. She is now stalking around the run and coop, upset that she is not inside with the others. However, peace now reigns supreme as the rest of the girls are just hanging out in the run on their roost while the tots are inside the coop eating breakfast. I expect they will be out soon. The only one who bothers the babies is Betty. She will be left out today to fend for herself with some water in a shady spot. She is still stalking around the coop and run and its been an hour. Perhaps a few days of this will teach her a lesson.

While I was out this morning I saw a robin chasing a squirrel through a tree. I then saw something drop from the tree. Turns out to be the robins nest. The squirrel must have been robbing it and the robin was defending its nest. I didnt see any eggs or babies. Another reason to hate those evil furry tree rats.

Breela---I dont believe that Pearl laid that many eggs in 24 hours. I suspect that either she laid them over a period of days and you didnt see them or someone else laid them. Either way, she has quite the collection going on. The eggs can be easy to miss if they hide them and I have a couple of silkie girls who do that. Thats when I usually find them going from sitting on one or two to suddenly having six. They are very sneaky about their eggs that way!

Stony---do your baby ducks ever get species identity issues with having a chicken mommy??? lol

Okay---off to the pharm for more fun and adventures. Hen---hope you have been reading the cynical pharmacist. She has been on a roll!

Allow me.

Do you not have a rooster in there? He would set Betty the PIB (pain in the but) straight.

As for the squirrel you need a rat trapped nailed to the tree. Bait the thing with peanut butter 'n snap it's neck. You'll wish you did when they come for your chicks or eggs. They are omnivores. They will eat baby birds.

I have only had my hens a few weeks so I am just being impatient I am sure they will go broody they just aren't going fast enough for me LOL
Are you saying the surgery was really bad or your shoulder? I am so hoping the doctor is exaggerating about the pain after the surgery cause I just don't do well with Narcotic pain meds so can't take any of them.

I will have to try this for now on never heard of it but it sure would have saved me lots of time and lots of plants.

As I recall it wasn't that bad. Not as bad as a kidney stone. I had both knees done too and I survived. Just lay down for two or three days if you can. You know we men are big babies and if I say it wasn't that bad it will be easier for you. Unless of course he used dull tools.

If you see any rust on them don't let him operate.

Update on the wedding we served at.

The menu was "Jerk chicken" ( don't know what makes them jerk, maybe cooties) Rice and beans, Fried Plantains, Corn bread and tossed salad.

I worked doing the Plantains. Easy to do but better with some salt on them. Frying them was messy though and we didn't have splatter screens.

DW says it's a Caribbean seasoning called "Jerk". Anyhow it was good.

Brought all the skins of the Plantains home to put in the compost. There were 405 people or thereabouts. A lot of Plantains. I will be making them for at home.

Check in with you later. I hate to go and collect eggs it's so hot. I think some of the broodies just stand up and flap their wings to keep the temp right on their eggs.

And less painful I am sure !

Well the Cass 11 spent the night outside in their large dog crate .on the back deck
They settled in just fine in their covered kitty litter box ..inside ....quite fitting... as they fill it with chicken litter anyway ...

Something funny happened yesterday ..
They were starting their jump & peck at eat other ...I thought what would a hen do ? So I growled at them ...they stopped & the rest of the babies ran towards me .
So TOB growl at them and see what they do ...LOL
My little Samatra Sammy flew from the top of the box to my shoulder so cute ! as a good morning ..good to see you .

Hey everyone! things are great up on the hill, but I'm looking for chicks. my broody hatched out 3 beautiful chicks for a friend of mine and she was supposed to let my hen brood them for a few weeks, but she took them already... now my hen is bereft. she won't stop calling for them... it's been 2 days. I sent Adorava a message, but I see she hasn't been online for 2 days... if anyone has any chicks under 2 weeks old, could you send me a message? I'll travel a certain extent for them... Adorava would be perfect, she's the next town over... I don't care what breed or what color... just looking for little ones...

ETA, thanks to a quick response, I already have 3 perfect chicks, settled happily with their new Mama... what a relief to see her all happy again!

Okay if I recall correctly the anesthesiologist gives you a strong sedative before they wheel you into the operating room. And ... That's all I remember. LOL so there won't be a thought to check tools!

I'm not sure what's up with people getting puppies in my area this spring, but another puppy was in my yard yesterday and killed my favorite hen and ripped the tail feathers right off another. Anyway, I already spoke to the owner, who was profusely apologetic and promised never to let it happen again. I kind of 'killed him with kindness' - when he was down here collecting his dog's collar (it had gotten snagged on something when I was shooing it off) I introduced him to the birds and gave him some green eggs, since he thought they were neat. So I'm hoping, since he seemed to feel so bad, that that will be the end of it. I have some of my favorite girl's eggs too, so into the incubator they go.

I also finally got my very first duck egg today for the season, yay! Seems like the warm weather has inspired them to get off their fluffy butts finally.
