they are all tucked in ..for the night..inside the kitty litter box inside the dog cage & under the comforter .

Cass looks like one of the younger Americana s is a roooooo ! Sporting a good size comb & waddles at 3 weeks old

The rest still look like young ladies ..

3 chicks hatched.  woohoo.  I moved the co-broody to the floor and put her 2 eggs down there.   They were PEEPING!!!!  I hope they hatch after I moved them. I put the 3 hatched chicks under her with her 2 eggs.  She pecked them at first, but then settled down.   I will go back and check on them before my bedtime.    If I had known (researched) how long duck eggs take I would have held off on setting the chicken eggs for a few days, they were fresh enough to do that.  Oh well.   Live and learn.

That's awesome!

Good morning, Oct 1st just in time for Halloween!

Start work soon love my clients, but coworkers ugh so ignorant, some days I don't feel I can deal.

The youngest babies are doing great outside still separated from the older babies. They should be together soon, going to let them loose together on neutral territory then bring them in together.

Rancher good luck with all your broody girls.

Hope the day finds everyone well!

My bun is out there gettin busy pulling fur and making her nest! So glad these babies weren't born out in the woods!

I need to go to Home Depot or Lowes today and buy a bigger trash can. Ours are kinda small and even with two bags of garbage in them each the tops don't stay on so we never use them. Well, 3rd night in a row a raccoon or something has gotten into my garbage! I still don't know if it's a raccoon tho because we've always had much bigger messes from them. I really should just call Feher for one of their cans.

Rancher - regarding that little lonely chick, do you have any others that are due to hatch out or know someone that could loan you one?

Rancher,

I wish I could give you some kind of great advice, but I have, obviously, no experience with broodies, hatching, etc. The only thing that popped into my mind is perhaps trying to set up some temporary nesting/laying boxes for the girls that are looking to lay, but can't get into a box due to the broody invasion. Crates, sturdy boxes, etc... ?
Hope things work out soon.

Everyone have a great day; it's supposed to be lovely outside today.

Lynzi,

Have you ever tried using a bungee cord to tighten the lids to the can (handles)? That way if they tip, hopefully the lids will stay on, and busy raccoon hands can't get under the lids when they're upright.

Congrats Cass! Hope the duck eggs make it. Do you have another broody that can take them over if your broody that's on them now gives up?

No. What I am doing is taking the chicken hatchlings out from under the best momma in the world and putting them under her co-broody, who is in another coop, so she continues to sit on the duck eggs. I don't need more chicks, but I sure could use some ducks. She isn't amused at my handling her during "lockdown" but so far I still have all my fingers. The other momma isn't overly amused at chicks just showing up, but her eggs should have hatched last night....they were peeping when I moved them....so hopefully all is good in the henhouse this morning. I'll check closely when I get home from jury duty tonight.
