NY chicken lover!!!!

I would do one of two things (and I have done both on different occasions)  Lock her into the new point you want her to be in and don't let her out for 3 - 5 days, like you would do if you were starting with a new flock or moving a flock to a new coop location.  Or I would move her about Day 19 (lock down).  Since the eggs will be rocking and cheeping by that time she will not abandon them.

Ooooh that's a good idea. Maybe I'll wait then since the other girls don't seem to be bothering her too much and she can come and go as she pleases. It's after they hatch I'm worried about. So I'll move her a couple days before they're due. Thanks!!!

I didn't think it would be this hard. But now that I'm disabled I spend my entire day outside gardening and being with my girls. I have not gone away since getting them when they were chicks a year and a half ago. They follow me around like my dog and all they want to do is hang out with me. I never thought I could get so attached to a chicken. I made the mistake of naming each one by their personality. The hen I lost today was named Pecky because she would always peck while sitting on my lap. It's crazy that I am so heart broken right now.

So sorry for your loss. It hurts each and every bird I lose. But it does make room for new birds. I find I get 3 for each one I lose. LOL

Jayin---my condolences on your loss. It is okay to be upset and second guess yourself. It shows you care about your critters. I think that animals make us better humans. Take solace in the fact that you gave her a good life while she was here. We understand your loss.

Lynzi==glad your runaway mommy came back home.

Finally is cooling off and the cheeps had a nice evening out with chicken daddy. I had to work. However, when I came home Little Man and his women were out and they came running for me as soon as I opened the car door. Who knew chickens could recognize their mommys car? My silkies just love me.

Enjoy the cooler weather all!

20 more days..... Go eggs go! And for the heck of it, tossed my one blue egg under Luna tonight. Shhh, don't tell the hubby....

Here's a pic of my bun after her 36hr venture in the woods....

Lynzi,

Maybe the grass wasn't necessarily greener on the other side of the...hutch. So home she hopped! She looks a little pooped out, LOL!

I am SO glad you have her back, safe & sound!

She can tell her little ones all about her grand adventure.

I got my bunny back!!! The kids came in yelling she had bounced back into the yard and my husband ran out there and got her! She's still too fat too so she mustn't have delivered her kits yet. Back home safe and sound!

For anyone who needs a little cheering, here are a couple of my girls to give you a smile.

Chumley hanging with my son. She is no frills about being handled. She is a great poster child for the friendliness of the Orpington breed. Couldn't resist an Orp. I know I'll pay the price with broodiness later on, haha.

One of our bigger girls, "Miss Pringles", the Delaware. She finally ate from my hand today...the last one to cave! She caught a bug today in the pen and tried valiantly to keep it for herself, but the Columbian Rocks tag-teamed her and wore her down. She finally ran to the Maran (boss lady) and just dropped it at her feet as if to say, "Here, you have it! Anyone but THEM!" One of the Rocks made off with the bug, anyway. Poor Pringles!

They do make me smile!

I go out to see my girls and they make me smile. They are doing great, looks like my 14week old girls are accepting my younger girls so it makes sense that my silkie was just mean and that's why they didn't get along. My silkies are doing great in their own pen. And my top hen is just being a loud mouth Barred Rock.

Yayy, I'm so excited for you glad she is okay!!!!!

I am sorry for your loss. Don't be to hard on yourself. Unless you're a vet and even then it's hard to know what's going on. I honestly don't think it was sour crop but something more serious. We don't have X-ray vision and quite frankly chickens can be very fragile.

You are not crazy for being heart broken either, many of us are the same way.

Feel better soon,

heh, I've been told most banty roosters get little man syndrome. But they are so little and stubby you can ignore them. :p Yah kid go away you bother me. Not like my big roo with the big spurs. :)

Seriously tho, I expect my roosters to respect ALL humans, not hurt the hens after a learning period and keep the girls safe, find treats, call for predators, etc. None of mine are really all that friendly unless I have food to give the ladies. :p One day maybe I'll get a cuddly roo but then he'd probably run the wrong way if a hawk is stalking the girls.
I have a rooster that is a bantam Golden Laced Cochin who has 1 5/8 in. spurs. He is the friendliest rooster you will ever meet though. He runs from loud things but if his hens get to squawking he is there ready to fight in a heartbeat.
Here he is a year ago-

I guess I'll wait it out and let the big girls teach him a thing or two and see how it goes. How do I make him friendlier?? He's such a nervous nelly.....like he's got little man syndrome..... Haaaa
Just handle him more. They are always different as a youngster but once they get close to 10 months they settle right down and follow you around the yard finding things for you to eat. Believe it or not, PB wouldn't let me near him until he was closer to 7 months old. I couldn't touch him until about last December. But in the end, they all will settle down. I have 2 little guys that are from Rem and my hen Tuba, one of them runs to me the other go's the other way. I'll have to get pics of them sometime.
