NY chicken lover!!!!

Hi all,

I'm wondering what some of your chickens favorite "snacks" are. I haven't given a whole lot of "people food" to mine, but they all go absolutely nuts for grapes. I cut up some and give all of them, big and small, a little treat every day or two. I figure it's a healthy treat, but am not sure if it would promote diarrhea so I don't over do it.

They also like bread (but not as much as grapes), but I don't do that too often.

What are some safe, healthful treats for "

" ??

Thx...

TOB

Raisins , whole Bananas , they will eat the skin too. tomatoes ( corn on the cob of course ) Bird seed ...love that too , oatmeal
Ours get a treat of bread almost everyday ...I cube it so everyone gets some ...I try to get whole wheat ....sometimes it is white or italian or french bread .
dollar tree has whole wheat bread for a 1.00 most of the time
Sometimes I put the bread in a little yogurt..
Want to see something funny ? Give them some yogurt ..stand back though ...it splatters everywhere ..LOL

Morning All,
I want to go out today and pick up a hygrometer for this incubator today but really don't feel like making the drive all the way out to Walmart. I was out that way yesterday for about 4 hours and really don't want to drag the kids back out again today. I hate bringing my kids to the larger stores with me. Wonder if Tru-Value or Nightingale's up in Tully will have one. That would be a much quicker drive for me.

Checked on Stella today, it's day 21 for those eggs she's sitting on. She's getting kinda feisty now that it's closer to the hatch date so I don't try to move her to get a peek at the eggs. I figure if I hear peeping they hatched. Didn't hear much today, but then again the silkie coop is right next to her and those chicks - even at 12 weeks old are still cheeping like chicks! So that was distracting me while I was trying to listen.

Speaking of those silkie chicks, I haven't said anything yet because I was so upset over this and blamed myself, but I'm down from 4 to 3 now. They were all doing fine, all living together with the adults under one roof. Well the day I decided to let them out with the big girls, Duncan, the silkie roo was chasing after everyone, even the chicks. Never did it while he was in the coop with them because they have been fine up until this point. Well I was outside with them all and all of a sudden I saw Duncan try to climb onto one of the chicks - the smallest one of the group. He quickly got off, the chick seemed ok, but apparently wasn't. I went up to the coop later in the evening to lock them and found it laying on the floor of the run, lifeless. I was so upset that I had lost yet another one of these chicks. I should have never let them out. Now Duncan is in the bigger girls since they do a good job of fending for themselves when he tries to mate with them. They turn right around, fluff out their feathers and he backs down. But this is why I questioned keeping him separated from the flock. I don't want to get rid of him because I need him for breeding. He's fine with the bigger girls, so I'm thinking I'll just leave him with them when I want to give the silkie hens a break.

I've finally decided which lav chick I'd like to keep. Just don't know who is a roo and hen still. None are showing any signs of comb development. They're all flat above their beaks.

So sorry to hear this . How old are the silkie chicks ?
I was concerned with this issue with our Roo & the 3 month olds . As he has been paying attention to them ..
Trying to call them with food & trying to circle them ..
I have stopped him as they are too young in my opinion ..
Anyone Else have a opinion on this issue ?

Has anyone heard of the Gnat problem ?
Illinois & Indiana ..I saw they had a problem in May .

Heres a article from the University

Some say Vanilla works
Also Vet rx or vicks vapor rub , A fan & keep the chickens in a dark place in side
Also Permethrin
...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Permethrin
swarms of them land on their face & bite open areas ...eyes ears nose , some go up their nose & smother them

Good morning, on my run this morning I saw several bunnies and of course thought of rancher!

Yes my knew is hurting me from the run but I don't stay still for long lol.

chickens are good I checked vents last night all look clean I still don't know what I'm looking for to tell if a chicken laying. Plus my older babies who when I acquired them had poppy butt are sick of me looking at their vents .

Off to start work have a great day!

I would never allow an employer to continuously short me even if I loved the job it is not fair to yourself or the other employees because then they are going to think they should be able to do it to everyone.

It was the other employees that warned me about getting shorted. It happens. You can keep very detailed records for yourself and fight for every cent they owe you or you can get on with enjoying your life. I choose the later. Plus they don't pay me for the hours I spend fighting with them about a $20 shortage and they would be numerous hours....not fighting actually saves me money. LOL

Morning All,
Looks like its going to be a beautiful day! Really don't wanna be working. Wish they would hurry up with this project and get it out of our boat so I can float on outta here! Didn't hear any peeping or cheeping from Stella's eggs this morning. How long will a broody sit on eggs after day 21 if they weren't going to hatch?I'm assuming they know at some point the eggs are done? I would be happy if at least 2 hatched.

So sorry ...can you have surgery to have your ovaries removed ? Or are you of child bearing age ?

I am hoping that one day I can manage it enough to have a child of my own. We will see, the root of my troubles are genetic and the doctors told my aunt for 12 years it wouldn't happen for her and she now has two beautiful girls.

I'm in the same boat. I have the 6 eggs under Phyllis right now that are on day 21 today. The chick under my EE hatched early, and the ones in the bator hatched early as well so this is my first time having eggs go the full 21 days. I'm a little nervous and I keep going outside to check on her haha kills me that I'm at work and cant right now :( Sorry about your eggs in the incubator by the way...that's really too bad. I think you need a hygrometer, I bought one for $8 on amazon that told me the temperature and humidity and it worked great.

Question! The 9 week old babies I have in the new coop like to gather up in a corner every night to sleep and only 4 or 5 of them reguarly get up on the roost. Is there any way to encourge them to stop climbing on top of one another and to just get up on the roosts? I mean without physically going in every night picking them up and putting them up there? It's terrible to watch them and it sounds awful.
