Pyxis---I didnt know there was a name for what Galadriel had. I looked up flystrike and it is indeed a nasty thing that can strike quickly. She showed no signs of discomfort but did hide in a corner. She had some runny poops so I am guessing thats what started the whole thing. I will have to inspect butts now and make sure everyone has a nice clean one so it doesnt happen again. Thanks for the info.

The two silkie chicks that are left are still running around and being babies so I am thinking they may be the lucky ones. Momma is doing a good job showing them what to eat and where to drink. I will start letting them out of the coop this weekend and put their food and water in the run so they can get to it. I will probably keep them if they are hens since I am now down one hen.

Terrorists and Divas are mixing it up a little more. Now that Olaf is gone, the divas are more willing to challenge the terrorist girls when goodies are being given. Doesnt always work but at least they are getting more of them. I try to feed goodies separately to both groups so that this doesnt happen a lot. The rooster booster seems to be working for everyone as they look less heat striken drinking the electrolyte/minerals water. I will keep them on it for a while.

Time to go fill feeders and waterers and lock up the silkies. Later gators.

Now I'm worried about this fly strike thing...there have been a lot of flies hanging around the coop and my BO hen Glady's has a bit of poop in the feathers around her vent and I've just kind of been letting it go because it's not too bad but now I feel like I need to go outside, grab her and give her a bath

How common is fly strike?!

Hen--I'm so sorry for your loss you're in my thoughts and prayers!

Went out to the coop to check on everyone and make sure the fan was still running, I noticed that one of my red sex links not only has gotten more red on it's face but has almost overnight sprouted gigantic red waddles. If I had my phone I would have snapped a photo but that will have to wait until tomorrow morning. the other sex link I got doesn't have anywhere near as much red or as much waddle.

Barred Rocks are also getting more red on their faces, but no sudden waddle growth *yet*. One landed on my arm before I left the coop. So cute.

Letting the kids start to free range, but they pretty much stick to the stall and their pen. Everyone put themselves to bed tonight, so happy the kids have learned where home is.
But Luna decided to bring her chicks out tonight. When I went to lock up, she was on the floor in the stall with 4 chicks, one chick was left by itself in the coop. Don't trust to leave her outside of the coop on the floor all night, so grabbed the chicks and then her. But I found that one of the chicks she brought out is injured. I don't know if it fell off the ramp or if she stepped on it, but one leg is pointing up and to the side. Don't know if it is broken or dislocated, tips of the toes are purple. I don't know what to do, if it can be fixed. Chick can't stand or walk, uses it's wing to help propel itself forward. Heartbroken to lose so many in less than a week. Considering pulling the chicks from her, because I really don't want to deal with any more death this week. Especially if I have to put this one down. Someone, please advise. :'(

Lape, I'm sorry I wish I had some advice for you, can you gently feel it's leg? maybe you can feel it without doing anymore harm. If you have it in isolation maybe make sure the baby has extra vitamins and more protein. I hope all works out for you.

Jlaw that was sad my Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is terrible with people in our yard it takes him a long time to get used to them and when you take him somewhere he is usually afraid of people so I guess I didn’t do a good job socializing him either. I just put him in a crate if someone comes although he will bark the whole time.

Pharm so sorry you lost another chick. I also am a walking mosquito buffet they never bother my husband but they all munch on me

Lynzi glad you got a good severance package .

Miquwid the puppy found me and I felt bad for it. Your sunflowers are doing great mine are mostly gone planted them to close to the chicken run but I do still have a few left.

Stony the ducks are adorable

Pyxis I agree about them being great if raised properly I feel any dog can made to be good or bad it depends on how they were raised.

Chick Princess I know I have a 15 yr old and he also does some of the childish foolish things I am always saying to him where was your head when you did that one but also know he will outgrow it. My 18 year old that just graduated said to me one day when I asked where was your head when you did that one Mom I am 15 it was either on girls or video games. LOL

Laperian sorry you are having trouble with the chicks I hope the one ends up ok.

Rancher Glad you like your job it makes going to work so much easier if you like what you are doing.

Okay someone remind me why I have a puppy I am going to have to puppy proof for sure as this one definitely looks to chew everything. Pretty sure we are going to name her Lilly.

Saw NP for shoulder this morning and they said it looks like the tendons that got reattached tore loose and the artificial cushioning they put in is out of place and I have fractured my collar bone which is from the metal head being out of place. Looks like I am going to have to have more surgery to repair it. They want me to take it easy with it until I can get an

Henicillan,
I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I will be thinking of you all.

Lynzi,
Glad your days of the stressful job will be coming to an end. Keeping my fingers crossed for a package you deserve!

Nutty,
Sorry about your hen. Hopefully the new chicks help keep your mind off it.
As for the puppy, I'm so glad it found you! Things happen for a reason. Often times, an animal who is rescued like that become the most amazing pets. It's like they know what you have done for them. I'm glad you stepped in to have the others rescued also.

Gramma,
Now you have me wondering if my "tetra tints" are really leghorns. Jlaw, my girls look identical to your pic of your leghorn. I'm just hoping for brown eggs, as it seems like that's what people want around here.

Being cloudy, it's a bit cooler today. Peeps seem to be happy. My broody, Blondie, is still holding tight to her nest. Another week and a half to go!

I've been busy gearing up for Winestock 2013 at Three Brothers Winery this Saturday. I have 4 batches of goat milk cream left to make, plus fresh facial wash and night cream and foot scrub. I have been busting my rear end on this show! 2000 people expected in a 5 hour time frame.
The Amber link is from a Rhode island Red male and either a white plymouth rock or white leghorn hen so they could look like either .
