NY chicken lover!!!!

Letting the kids start to free range, but they pretty much stick to the stall and their pen. Everyone put themselves to bed tonight, so happy the kids have learned where home is.
But Luna decided to bring her chicks out tonight. When I went to lock up, she was on the floor in the stall with 4 chicks, one chick was left by itself in the coop. Don't trust to leave her outside of the coop on the floor all night, so grabbed the chicks and then her. But I found that one of the chicks she brought out is injured. I don't know if it fell off the ramp or if she stepped on it, but one leg is pointing up and to the side. Don't know if it is broken or dislocated, tips of the toes are purple. I don't know what to do, if it can be fixed. Chick can't stand or walk, uses it's wing to help propel itself forward. Heartbroken to lose so many in less than a week. Considering pulling the chicks from her, because I really don't want to deal with any more death this week. Especially if I have to put this one down. Someone, please advise. :'(

I agree feel the leg ...maybe it can be set ...purple sounds like lack of blood flow ..it is pinching off something

The Amber link is from a Rhode island Red male and either a white plymouth rock or white leghorn hen so they could look like either .

History: Amber Sex Link Chickens are created by crossing a Rhode Island Red Chicken and a white Plymouth Rock Chicken.
They do look like the white plymouth rock
Yes but wouldn't the red from the RIR bleed through some by now? You shouldn't have a pure white amber sexlink. I've been trying to google "white amber sexlink" With no luck. That's why I listed a rock. I google most questions I have or wife has about anything. Normaly I can find the answer. You could try the "What Breed Or Gender is This?" area. If you do post the link to your post so we can follow some. I wouldn't mind seeing what others have to say about it.

Rancher, I took the lone black Orpington that you had to keep my silkie company. The new feathers coming in have light patches on them...

Any idea what that would mean for this little guy's adult feather colors?

Jlaw, my amber links came out pure white, well 5 did 1 has a splash of color. Colors in skin, hair, and I believe feathers, aren't genes that are dominant but the alleles actually blend. So when the genetic information is created if there is enough of one color when egg and sperm combine then even though one parent may be dark offspring can still be very light or white. It takes far more genetic manipulation to get the desired color a 100% of the time.

Nutty I'm so sorry ugh tendons are hard to repair in sure already know. Well good luck I wish you all the best. That's awesome I feel like my animals found me as well!

I hope everyone is well, off to work!

My BYC flock, if you could spare a moment to send up a prayer or good wishes to my family, I'd appreciate it tremendously. My 22-year-old nephew was killed in an accident on Sunday. My sister and brother-in-law, my other nephews, my family, and all his friends and loved ones are devastated - I'm asking all my friends to pray for us or send good thoughts our way, as the support is so greatly needed and appreciated.

A tiny bright spot in the darkness of the past few days - last night, all four duck eggs under my hen hatched into beautiful baby Rouens. They're for my youngest nephew, who at five years old has lost the big brother who was such a huge part of his life. Such a simple thing, yet so meaningful in times like these.
Amy, my thoughts are with you in you and your family's sadness.

Everyone has been free ranging a lot lately, but I think they will need to stay in for more time. Last night I woke up to coyotes very close, and had heard them in the day the day before yesterday. Will set up the electric fence so they have more space than just the chain link pen. They seem to be covering a lot of ground and not sticking together, either.

Morning Everyone,
I have three hours of "work" this morning and then I'm finishing my packing and heading out for the weekend. I reallly really hope the chicks end up being ok while I'm gone. Everything else will be fine. I told him he doesn't even have to worry about food and water for the bigger girls because they free range all day and get their water from the pool in the woods and any buckets that are laying around filled with rain water. Ducks too, told him just to throw some food in there at night mixed with water and then let them back out in the morning. Hoping everything goes well.

It's just those chicks I worry about most. But they seem to have been doing fine with my cleaning out their waterer just once a day the past two days.

I'm sorry to hear of of the losses and troubles in some of the flocks. If I don't comment it's not because I'm ignoring you it's because I really don't know what advice to offer as I am still only a year in with chickens.

I do always wish for the best outcome whatever that may be.

Checked the little injured chick this morning. Nothing feels broken. It looks like maybe the leg was dislocated, then popped back in the complete opposite direction. The foot is still facing down, just with toes facing backwards instead of forwards. Not sure if that is something I would be able to fix without doing more harm, since I can't tell which joint (leg or hip) is dislocated and which direction it twisted before popping back in. Or if there is damage in the joints. Otherwise a perfectly healthy chick. Cute, tiny, soft, fuzzy little chick.
