NY chicken lover!!!!

Big excitement this morning. We are watching my older son's dog, and he wakes up early. He seems to think when Earl crows its time to be up. Dh got up with him, they went downstairs and Coda went outside immediately. Bella and I stayed upstairs to wake up slowly. Then DH is urgently calling Coda back. There was a coyote close to the house somewhere, and he and Coda were sort of chasing each other in short bursts, they ran from the front yard to the back yard together. Then they were in the back, beside the pen and behind it, running and chasing. Coda is way faster than the coyote, but it didn't look like he was being regarded as dinner. Still, I didn't like them being so close. Bella and I were watching from the bedroom window, and Bella was barking...finally I called and heard Coda on the back deck. DH appeared with the bb gun. So that toy is ready. Around the time Coda was on the deck, another lighter colored coyote came out of the woods.

Plan for today: keep the dogs close, brushog more, make a lot of noise and dream of guns and more hot poultry net.

It did not look like Coda chased them away. It looked like they were claiming this as their territory. That needs to change.
I have many feet of electric poultry netting and guns. I have only had to use the guns on animals that fit though the net(to steal food). Foxes dogs, and coyotes have not gotten though. More netting is good!!

Good luck!

Glass---you really need to get a rifle and kill those coyotes. What they did was a classic example of trying to eliminate competition in their claimed area. One coyote will come out and draw a dog out to chase it around. When it has drawn it out far enough, the second coyote or the rest of the pack will come out and kill the dog. Your dogs are being baited for killing by the coyotes. You need to keep your dogs close and kill those coyotes because they will kill your dogs. BB guns will not deter a coyote. A rifle will end it.

Heard a young hawk outside this morning. I could tell by its call it was a juvenile. Still learning to hunt I guess. I heard its parent call it from down the road a bit. My cheeps stayed quiet while it was here screaching its raggedy juvinile screach. Legolas was a good boy and got his brood back inside the enclosed run, safe from danger. He is a very good daddy and protector, always watching for danger and putting himself between the babies and hens to protect him. Still hasnt learned to leave Little Man alone but maybe he likes a good butt kicking.

Tab--time to let others do for you as you must hold that little girl in as long as possible.

Time to catch up on some work at home since I spent all week at work and hardly saw my home. You know you are working a lot when your chickens ask for ID because they dont recognize you! Ta for now.

Be carefull. Coyotes usually travel in packs, I believe. It would be terrible if they lured Coda away & then killed him

I only see single coyotes. I have always heard they travel in packs but that is not what my eyes have shown me over the last 46 years

You see the scout, as it was said the packs stay back, rarely ever coming out of the woods all at once. They are ambush hunters and the scout works as the lure..

while this may be I'll tell you this. I can be sitting in a tree stand for 4 hours. See only single coyotes traveling. Never seen a pack while sitting in the same place not moving for hours. I believe what my experiences tell me, not what is written on the web or in some book.

What they do is, as far as I can tell is hunt alone and IF they kill something big enough to share, like a small deer, call in others to share the kill. Those I see in the fields hunting rabbits make their kill and eat it themselves not calling anyone in

We hear many howling at night but only ever see 1. Whenever they are killed, only 1 at a time. We've never seen them in packs either. We had 1 run through the back yard a few years back.

x2 Neighbor shot a coyote in his back yard....he suspects it wanted to lure his dog out to "play", as it was coyote pup season. Never saw the rest of the pack but we hear them almost every night when they have a kill...just over the ridge behind the neighbor's property. So I know there are a lot of them out there....and I visualize them all in a circle around the kill howling and yapping, waiting their turn for a bite to eat.

Glass we hear packs up the hill all the time. I've never seen more than 1 at a time though. You definitely need to kill this coyote asap. If I wasn't moving the only child into college today, I would gladly spend the day in your backyard to take care of it for you.
