NY chicken lover!!!!

Aria sent me her photo she wanted to share with you all while the topic of discussion was holiday lighting around the coops. This is a picture of the wreath she made from an artificial tree that is hanging on the side of her coop.

How pretty ! And where does Aria live, that they don't have snow yet ?????

Sophie proving again nest boxes are not for her even tho they are above her. She was not impressed I was in the coop putting down bedding and refilling their dust bath box. I explained to her I wanted everything done so the hen sitters didn't have to while I am gone and that's its suppose to be cold next week when I am gone. She just continued to growl and voice her displeasure, but she did leave me nice dark egg :)

We had snow here but the temps in the 60s melted most of it. It snowed last night again but temps are 32 so we have a mix of snow in mud. Yuck!!

I know, I have no way of knowing who is laying and who isn't. However I do know both my Olive Eggers are laying at least! I've turned my eggs 3 times a day, however some days they were only getting done twice. I don't hatch nearly enough to justify buying a turner...though I think next time I hatch I'm going to keep them in an egg carton and just shift the carton instead of all of them one by one.

Morning All,
Waiting for my BR to lay her egg before Stella does! I have a hard time telling the two eggs apart and it figures they are both in the same nestbox right now trying to lay their eggs at the same time.

Guess I spoke too soon, went out there just 10 minutes after checking them last and both eggs were laid! UGH Owell, I'm 90% sure the lighter brown one is from the BR, especially compared to Stella's others eggs I have saved already. As of right now, I have 2 silkie eggs (waiting for her to lay another at the moment as she is in the nest box, soreally 3) 2 Buff Orp eggs, 2 Lav Orp eggs and 1 BR egg ready for my incubator. Hopefully something good comes from this this time around.

I have a question...How many times do you all turn your eggs? I've only done it twice a day in the past but know that some of you turn 3 times a day.

I turn three times a day. The idea is that that egg 'sleeps' for the time you are sleeping on a different side each day - that way, since it's spending the longest time it will go unturned on a different side each night, the embryo is less likely to get stuck to a side of the egg.

Gave my birds their first fermented feed today! They gobbled it but I gave them too little so I had to toss out some crumbles so everyone would be full. I'll bring out more tomorrow. I also decided to start a second bucket so that I can take from alternating buckets each day and be sure that the feed had at least 24 hours to ferment before it's fed.

Anybody else in here doing the New Year's Day hatchalong? I'm doing EE's, OEs, and exchequer leghorns this year. I would have done naked necks too but couldn't find any eggs.

Speaking of the silkie coop the big brawny hens like to lay in there they can barely fit in the small nest box with their tails hanging out and then I find like three crowded in there trying to lay at once.

I have 4 nice, roomy, IDENTICAL nest boxes set up in quad fashion, but often find hens ponied up in one. It doesn't look too comfortable, but I guess it's like kids at school that jump on a fashion fad. Everyone just HAS to have it!

Gorgeous wreath! I also love the cedar shakes on the building, as well as the style. Very festive all around!
