NY chicken lover!!!!

I turn three times a day. The idea is that that egg 'sleeps' for the time you are sleeping on a different side each day - that way, since it's spending the longest time it will go unturned on a different side each night, the embryo is less likely to get stuck to a side of the egg.

Gave my birds their first fermented feed today! They gobbled it but I gave them too little so I had to toss out some crumbles so everyone would be full. I'll bring out more tomorrow. I also decided to start a second bucket so that I can take from alternating buckets each day and be sure that the feed had at least 24 hours to ferment before it's fed.

Anybody else in here doing the New Year's Day hatchalong? I'm doing EE's, OEs, and exchequer leghorns this year. I would have done naked necks too but couldn't find any eggs.

I see what you're saying about making sure they are "sleeping" on a different side each night. But can you give me an idea of what times I should be turning them then? Normally I would wake up turn them at around 7am and then turn them again before bed-anywhere between 7-9pm. Should I give them an extra turn around noon - 1pm?

Aria sent me her photo she wanted to share with you all while the topic of discussion was holiday lighting around the coops. This is a picture of the wreath she made from an artificial tree that is hanging on the side of her coop.
Gorgeous wreath! I also love the cedar shakes on the building, as well as the style. Very festive all around! TOB
This was the coop my husband built when we first got our Call Ducks. After losing our Call Ducks my friend asked if I would like to try Chickens. We said yes...and my friend Kathleen brought me Buff Silkies. We have been adding to our flock. And we have Lindsay to thank for our beautiful Splash Rooster. He is growing and is so handsome. I know Rancher says: they are not chickens, they are Aliens. We have 10 Silkies and one Rooster. Regards, Aria

Pyxis - Wanted to add too that I would join the New Years Hatch along, but I really wanted to set these eggs tonight or tomorrow. My oldest egg is from 12/3 and didn't want to wait too long this time around on setting them. I know I have ten days but I figured the sooner the better the hatch rate. Right now I have 9 eggs. I think I'll hold out until tomorrow before setting them with hopes I'll get another silkie egg, and nother egg from my BR. I'm up to 3 from Buff Orp, 3 from my lavender silkie, 2 from my Lav Orp and 1 from my BR. I care more about the silkies at this point than anything else. But figured I'd throw in some others with them JUST in case only silkie egg hatches. That's what happened last hatch - I had only 1 silkie hatch and 1 Orp egg.

I DID catch Gru mating with Stella today so her eggs should be fertile. Maybe I'll end up with more blue Orps. Unsure about the others. I'll be surprised if they are fertile. Stella seems to be a little more lax with Gru than the other two. They run off the minute he flinches.

Miquid I love big trash days here. My girls have paving stones up to their coop from the couple dozen I found free. It's just dirt and is muddy all the time so it was a big bonus. I also like to pick up buckets and pallets (free starter wood for wood stove) the buckets make great nest boxes (no bugs can live in plastic) & I have gotten so much lumber to build stuff. Oh and stuff to scrap to. It amazes me how wasteful people are!!

As of now I got two pieces of a crib or small bad it had wheels on it, two buckets and a pallet when I walk the to dogs tonight I'm going to do a closer check to see if I can get anything else. Sunday should be a great day!!!

Beautiful I would hang that up all year round!
Morning All,
Waiting for my BR to lay her egg before Stella does! I have a hard time telling the two eggs apart and it figures they are both in the same nestbox right now trying to lay their eggs at the same time.

Guess I spoke too soon, went out there just 10 minutes after checking them last and both eggs were laid! UGH Owell, I'm 90% sure the lighter brown one is from the BR, especially compared to Stella's others eggs I have saved already. As of right now, I have 2 silkie eggs (waiting for her to lay another at the moment as she is in the nest box, soreally 3) 2 Buff Orp eggs, 2 Lav Orp eggs and 1 BR egg ready for my incubator. Hopefully something good comes from this this time around.

I have a question...How many times do you all turn your eggs? I've only done it twice a day in the past but know that some of you turn 3 times a day.

Good luck with the hatch do at least a minimum of three times if not more just keep it a odd number from what I read. I can't wait to see what you get with the BR you should have a good layer from that mix.

Sophie proving again nest boxes are not for her even tho they are above her. She was not impressed I was in the coop putting down bedding and refilling their dust bath box. I explained to her I wanted everything done so the hen sitters didn't have to while I am gone and that's its suppose to be cold next week when I am gone. She just continued to growl and voice her displeasure, but she did leave me nice dark egg

We had snow here but the temps in the 60s melted most of it. It snowed last night again but temps are 32 so we have a mix of snow in mud. Yuck!!

Yes I understand that lay where ever you want! Yes lots of mud, I found Rancher's tip about the cardboard helps a lot.

I don't think so I want to build an egg turner I got paranoid crazy about the egg turning drove me nuts. But I am excited to see how your Exchequer Leghorns turn out. How are the faverolles?

I have 4 nice, roomy, IDENTICAL nest boxes set up in quad fashion, but often find hens ponied up in one. It doesn't look too comfortable, but I guess it's like kids at school that jump on a fashion fad. Everyone just HAS to have it!

The best part is they are stuffed in there together and growling at each other really?!! My barred rock will attack no remorse if she is disturbed while laying and uses the appropriate nest box of course she usually has a rooster escort spoiled little brat. I don't know who came up with Egg Song it's more like an annoying scream with absolutely no melody what so ever.

Yes aliens they are something I love watching them dart across the yard.

LOL My boy has been able to sweet talk all the ladies accept a few but they are young still. My welsummer just loves him always trying to be by his side. My brabanter will have nothing to do with him she fights him off and he says okay he's good to the ladies. Then he looks at me, I'm like I'm not going to help you, you are on your own.

Thanks Miquwid - Now that I know for sure there is a BR egg in there, I hope that one hatches. Hopefully I'll have at least 2 eggs from to her to put in there so at least 1 hatches. for some reason I'm having a hard time steady-ing my humidity this time around. Its been up and then down. I filled the troughs the same way I did with the eggs from ke5hde and for some reason it's much higher this time. But when I fill just one it's too low. WTH! I just emptied out the water and when the temp settles again I'm going to try a shallow dish with sponge instead so I can actually measure the water I'm putting in there. Setting the eggs will have to wait until tomorrow night now.

Thats how Stella is - she's always by his side. But the Buff and BR - forget it, they just run from him. And the the Blue Orp is still young and just runs away from everyone. She's getting so big but still keeps her distance from everyone. I felt so bad because I took the frizzle out of there the other day (she was buddy buddy with my blue orp since they were both about the same size). she is going to start laying soon (I hope) and when she does I want her in with the silkies so IF her eggs get fertilized by anyone, they are fertilized by my silkie and not Gru. So I think the Blue pullet may be "lonely" now. She has the three other hens but hasn't warmed up to them yet. So she kinda keeps to herself. I feel bad...

THANKS TO ALL ON BYC THAT TRIED TO HELP ME POST PHOTOS.
I HAVE A DELL AND AOL AND I THINK IT IS NOT WORKING THE SAME
AS IT SHOULD. ALL THE ICONS NEEDED TO POST...ARE NOT VISIBLE.

I SENT THE MESSAGES TO MODERATOR AND HOPEFULLY SOMEONE
WILL HELP. THANKS AGAIN.

I HAD PHOTOS I WANTED TO SHARE...BUT WILL NEED TO WAIT.
THANKS AGAIN. YOU ARE ALL SUPER AND I AM LEARNING A LOT ABOUT
CHICKENS. REGARDS, ARIA

Try Google Chrome!!! It's Wonderful!!

Awww poor baby it's rough breaking in with the older hens. Try adding and subtracting sponges to regulate humidity. That made the difference for me. I built a big and deep Incubator so I had a total of 6 spongs by the end for the higher humidity, and used 3 for the lower humidity.

They're good! I'm going to have a solid breeding quad, and they'll have a big 8 by 8 coop all to themselves till I start hatching their eggs!

That's what I do, and I've never had one get stuck yet.
