NY chicken lover!!!!

Morning!!

It is soooooo windy out there today! I wanted to create some sort of trough for the ducks and chickens today out in the chicken yard but thats not going to happen. I don't put water or food inside the coops, so what I usually do is have two buckets out there, one for water and one for feed. But of course they always get knocked over. I wanted to take an old rubbermaid bin and cut it down in half or even by 3/4 and keep it close to the netting so I can just dump the water and feed in. The ducks like they're feed mixed with water so theirs is more like soup. The chickens I've noticed eat more of the feed that is wet than the feed that is dry so I think I can get away with making one trough for everyone than to have two separate ones in the chicken yard.

You might consider those black rubber tubs TSC sells. They're great for water cuz when it freezes you can get the ice out pretty good. If you thought is to pour the feed from outside the chickens wire you might also consider a length of 2" or larger pvc pipe, w/ a funnel of some kind on top. Then you can just pour it in without going into the run. If that is what you had in mind.

I've considered a five gallon bucket with such a set up, but I'm to concerned about mice. Right now I raise up the feeders to the top of the run ceiling and hang them there at night.

Not all my ideas work out and some have been costly in time and money.

I never share these with dw, of course. Sometimes I think she's afraid to ask so she doesn't.

I like the black rubber tubs, I actually have a small one for the silkie coop. But I was looking for something shallow that I'm just going to leave out there. They finish whatever I put out there for the day so I don't want anything to be left out over night attracting mice. I've finally gotten rid of those in and around my house - don't need to be attracting any more.

Does anyone have a rooster near Albany that they are trying to get rid of? One that's eating size...
Someone just had a bunch of roosters they were giving away on the Sloansville Poultry and Small Animal Swap page on FB, they're all gone tho. If you're on there you can try posting there and see if someone gets back to you, if no one has any here.

]Rancher, I am thinking that mice would not be deterred by the feed being hung from the ceiling. They are able to climb very well. Maybe you could feed the chickens in the type of tins we all keep Christmas cookies in, and at night put the tops on. Of course, that would mean taking the tops off in the morning, which is worth the hassle for Christmas cookies, but maybe not chicken feed.

Forgot to say WELCOME to Huntin' Fool.

Thanks I'll look into that...a co-worker just asked me if I had one and unfortunately I'm actually happy with the 3 I have and the one I'm willing to part with is way too small to eat.

question regarding that...Are all three of these roos housed together? If so did they grow up together or were the brought in at different times? For example, did you have one as an adult and bring in some teens the some turned out to be roos?
