Yay!!! I hope they do well, they are so sweet

I don't feed them treats too often so they may just need to figure out that that's yummy stuff!!

As for a nest box, I was using a rattan cat cozy and one for some reason was laying in a little plastic box I had there for a roost step. I guess it worked out better for her.

I hope to give all my chickens (when I have collected "the whole set") some small treat every day, at roosting time. Incentive to come back in the coop at night. Food is only going to be given in the coop. My own "time for bed" training. I don't want to leave any food anywhere that might entice other wildlife into the yard. Racoons, possums and coyotes call out back of my house "home". Of course in the summer there will be LOTS of extra stuff around...in the winter and early spring? Not so much. I think tomorrow I'll seek out some fresh greens (weeds) for their night time snack. I know bread isn't good for them, but it was what I had around on short notice.

Some bread is fine, just not a ton. In the winter I tend to give more bread because it's cold and they love it. In the summer not so much because they have plenty of forage. The broody has not kicked any eggs out yet. Still 11 under her. Yeah!

Yah, my hubby buys a nine pack of bagels each week and never eats them all so I crumble one up every so often for the chickies. One bagel for 20+ won't hurt em. I also do BOSS. My chickies get mushy chicken food every morning when it's cold and they think it's a treat.

They'll KILL me for scrambled egg, too.

They LAID AN EGG. Well, two of them did. I GOT TWO EGGS!!! SOOO exciting.

THey don't like bread. At least not potato bread. They ate the whole wheat roll pieces last night, but not the potato bread today. They like cheese. They didn't know what to do with lettuce.
I saw 2 of them eat real chicken food and drink water. Probably the ones that laid an egg.

I cracked one of the eggs Featherz gave me. HARD shells. I boiled some to feed at treats tonight, too. I don't want them eating junk, but I do want them to associate dusk with treats in the coop, so they go back in the coop. I don't have a run yet, so if they are gonna go outside it's free range time. Will work on run this weekend when our town has free "Garden Day" which means as much free mulch as we can shovel. Need the free mulch to level up the run area and raise it up above the spring water level. They also have a sand floor and an 8x8 foot coop for 4 itty bitty lil' girls.

I am going to take 2 eggs to fry for my morning client tomorrow. They are soooo tiny. He's gonna crack up. Then I'll fix his real breakfast, cuz there is no way those two tiny eggs are going to fill him up. Wish I had some mini bagels to toast to go with them. THAT would be soooo funny.

Bon jour from the Copper Marans (heh heh heh) and all those other crazy breeds! I just love reading about the history of all these different breeds which I know is probably a bit nuts

! I acutally have a large notebook I started with the information in plastic sheets that details as much info as I can find on each breed that I have or want to have.

Rancher: Did you see my Dellies poem I wrote a few days back???! I have a question for you on my Delawares - which are absolutely gorgeous and I am in love with

how do you tell who is who for sexing??? I have one or two that are just staying a lovely light cream to almost white with just a touch of the grey speckling in their neck feathering area - those I am quite certain are pullets. Then I have two that have the heavier grey to black coming in on their cape area and black tipping on their tail feathers - I assume they are cockerels? I also have one that I could swear was a dellie pullet but now she is getting this lavender color in her feathers that is mixing in. Very pretty but what the heck - is there such a thing?????

I have a couple sources for the Copper Marans and will PM you Dan Prathers information - he specializes in nothing but Marans and I think he had the darkest eggs I have ever seen. I think I got the French Black Copper Marans from him and some possibly from Laurie (Sylverfire) in Hudson Falls, NY.

All eggs are a go at this time and I have lock down this Friday on a bunch of barred rock chicks for my husband.

I am going to have to get a couple of Silkies to go with the cutenesses that I just bought at TSC and I have GOT to get together with MuggsMagee for some chickens we have on hold.

I came to the realization and told my husband today that I actually realized that Chickens will end up being my new passion. Maybe this is something I need to pass along in therapy

I mean, they don't require as much work as gardening and walking dogs and all the extra stuff like that. You love them, feed them, water them, groom them (occassionaly) let them roam and admire them and clean their area out as needed.

I still love gardening and always will but since I have to cut down I think I am going to be a chicken collector now.

Do they have names yet? I called them eenie meenie minie and moe but that was just for fun since they were hard to tell apart.

I have a partridge Wyandotte Banty hen sitting on about 10 eggs.
.
I don't want to keep them as I have 4 of their offspring growing out now.

If anyone is interested in teh chicks when they hatch, let me know. Probably $5 each. 'She just started sitting, so at least 3 weeks out.
