Lots of nice folks here. Lots of helpful, nice folks.

Are you getting little chicks or full grown hens? Good luck with them. I am having a blast with my 4. Soon to be 10. Then 16. OMG, I can't add. I have SIXTEEN chickens ordered.

I'm getting chicks

AHA I see.... 4 + 16 = 10 lol . Is that the chicken math I keep reading about? I think I am already a casualty of that.... I got DH to agree to 3 chicks and then ordered 4... (I told him it's just in case one is a boy or one doesn't make it

)

Chicks are sooo cute. You only ordered 4 to get your 3? 50% of those that hatch are roosters. And you can count on one or two dieing from undiagnosed illness. To get 3 you needed to order a DOZEN.

Can you add to your order?

Fyre--you never give them meat??? Mine are all over meat like a pack of starving coyotes on a fresh kill!!! They LOVE meat of any kind! Oatmeal mixed with yogurt and shredded cheese is a favorite breakfast and they will walk across live coals for grapes. Seriously, they are voracious raptors. My dh took his plate of dinner outside with him the other night cause they were out freeranging. As soon as they saw he had a plate in his hand, all 8 came running (the dog too) and surrounded him. It looked like a mugging scene out of a movie. He walked over to the lawn chair and sat down. BIG mistake!!! Not only was he surrounded but my one girl Flo jumped up onto his knee! He's yelling at her to get off, trying to hold up his plate and watch the dog and the other chickens at the same time! I was doubled over laughing on the kitchen porch! I finally took pity on him and called the girls over and threw them some peas. Better than tv entertainment!

I gave Mumbles and the babies some yogurt today. She looked at my finger for a bit then took a taste. The babies watched her and after her first peck, they swarmed my hand and ate like greedy little fuzzbutts! She let them eat first which surprised me. The little queen then had mommy time and proceeded to stretch out on me and sleep. She's weird. She sleeps on her sides or her back when she is on me. I have my suspicions that she doesnt know she is a chicken. She's going to hate me when I move her and the babies out to their tractor. Still have a couple of months though(hehehe). I need to tinfoil my whole house!!!

Haha! I did the same. Ordered 7 to 'make' 6, in case I lose one. They are sexed, so 90% error margin not taken into account....

I think my DH would have me committed if I ordered a dozen chicks right now
lau.gif
but I like your chicken math Cass

Yes, I originally was planning on 6 for this year... though I probably would have ended up ordering 7 or 8... when I build the "big" coop I'd better make sure there's room for a lot more than I planned for ...

I was originally going to get four of them. Then, I thought, "no - how about half a dozen?" That half-dozen then became 9, because I could have three of three different breeds. Then it became 12, because, hey, a dozen!

So, I have fifteen chicks on the way, and I know that's not the end of it.

My husband also has the overbuilding disease. He was originally going to build a nice little coop for a few chickens (those four/six/whatever). The combination shed/coop ended up being 10' x 20', and is probably more solidly built than the house!

Good man. If you ever need extra money, I'm sure you can loan him out, for a small fee, of course.

He'd probably work for parts for his '88 Dodge Ram, his '65 Mustang (project car) or tractor parts.

Fyrekitten - Can't move, we love it here. We have 70 acres but mostly crop land. We do have 4 acres around the house. DH just doesn't want to get in over our heads. (chuckle, snort - too late!

) It's just so hard to be responsible!

Doris wants to brood eggs so bad I feel sorry for her. *sigh*
She didn't want us to have the one she laid tonight and was sitting on her nest growling at us. Ok - it was funny too. She still let us have the egg in the end.

Time to clean the chickies.

How fantastic! I hope someday to have a nice piece of land. We have 12 acres right now... had to fight tooth and nail for every square inch of that... a story for a different time!
Sometimes my friends will tease me for moving back here to WNY, the economy isn't that great for what I do for a living, but after living in several different parts of the country no place is as beautiful as home!

Good morning,
This board moves fast

DH seems to be learning chicken math. Last night, he was looking through the breeds on the main BYC site. He kept picking more and more out, lol, and looked at me and said "Jeez, hon, I'm up to like 25-30 hens here!?".
lol.png

We are sticking to about a half dozen to start though, I do not need to be overwhelmed in one more way. I'm already going in six different directions daily
