NY chicken lover!!!!

I gave the girls a head of cabbage this weekend. I have it hung up. I put it up saturday afternoon. They still hadn't touched it that much by night. They got it figured out today! There is just a little less then half left. I think that they really enjoyed it.

I should try this, though when I give mine anything different, they don't seem to know what the heck to do with it, either. How high did you hang it, head height or lower than that? Also, just any kind of cabbage is OK?

Thx.

Thats okay ...Little things are the worst !
I probably spell it that way coz thats the way I pronounce it with a ..a
I dont think my SUMATRA Hen T T weighs 4 pounds she is teeny ...tiny ...I would be surprised if she weighed 3 pounds .
Im going to weigh them both tomorrow
You have birds from my stock....and they ARE tiny. One of mine stands next to the rooster and I thought it was a shadow, not another bird. LOL I'm not exactly sure why mine are slightly smaller than Stony's, but it could be that most of his grow up under a broody, so only the strong survive and mine were all coddled and cuddled and raised indoors....and even the weak survived. I don' t have a single roo left that came directly from Stony and only 1 hen. If I ever get a Sumantra to go broody, rest assured I am going to put some eggs under her to hatch. I really would like my birds to be larger and lay slightly larger eggs, like the stock they are decended from.

hmm they don't sound too bad. I have to change stuff around this spring with what birds I'm keeping and what new ones I want. Going to make my big coop black sexlink making only or pure breed ameraucanas. barred rockshens , goldend cuckoo maranshens, ameraucana roos and hens, and then probably some ee/oe's just to make some F2 strings non sexlinks.

Then I have to make a silkie coop for son. And maybe another coop for me but don't know what breed I want in there may try these Sumatra's out.

Quote: Good , my little hen ( 8 months) lays a small egg almost every day sometimes every other day .
So they may get bigger ...Cool !
Ditto what Rancher said about staying in school. I have 3 children. 2 quit school for various reasons, one finished. 2 regret their choice and HATE their jobs (one even changes jobs ever couple of years to keep sane....so no career ladder for him). The one that finished her education is MUCH happier with her entire life than her brothers are. (and she can afford to travel and take vacations...they can't)

DON'T BE A FOOL, STAY IN SCHOOL. Loans. Talk to school counselors to see if there is money around the school she might qualify for. Borrow text books. Buy books online (MUCH CHEAPER). Forgo other pleasures in life to free up money for tuition and school related expenses. Ask for Cash for every gift giving occation. (My daughter bought one semester books each year with money from christmas and birthday ,,,b-day in December) Might have to give up the chickens (cuz feed cost money) until after graduation. Hey, then we'll all know what to give as graduation present!!! CHICKS!!!!
that makes sense even the runts survived ..Your a Good Chicken Mama
So are you on Vacation ? Or did you get a new phone .?

I am hoping she goes broody in the spring ...I will give her other chicky eggs too .
I HATE incubating !

She doesnt want to quit ..her second job WAS paying for it I think ..
Good suggestions - I even saw rent a text book ..I think it was on Ebay .

I don't want one this spring but I cant wait for these silkies to go broody. I was thinking of getting a sportsman but desided I'm going to hold off cause if my son desides to keep silkies after this year I don't think i'll need it.

My teenie hens eggs are - small . I dont normally sell them ..( I eat 2 for breakfast when I have them ..) they are almost 1/2 the size of my RIR & sexlinks ..eggs
I dont know Stonys eggs may be bigger ? as Cass said his chickens are bigger than ours

Lynzi - egg question

I have noticed with my hens ...Hens eggs lighten as they age . the 2 darker brown ones are from the newer layers ..
I think their pigment supply runs out some as they age ..but they get bigger

Have you seen the White Faced Spanish chickens? Those are pretty cool looking.
