NY chicken lover!!!!

FYI,

I was comparing the Agway to the Purina labels.

Purina has a bit more or less of somethings in it plus Vit. A and E. I'm afraid it was sewn into the bag at an angle and I can't read all the ingredients exact.

However both proteins are 16%.

Agway / Purina

lysine 0.7 / 0.55

methionine 0.3 / 0.25

crude fat 2.5/ 2.5

crude fiber 8.0/ 7.0

calcium 3.4-3.9/ 3.2-4.5.

phosphorous 0.45/ 0.5

salt 0.25-0.65/ 0.3-0.8

sodium 0.15-0.23/ -

Manganese - / 175.00000 PPM

Vit A - / 3000.00 IU/LB

Vit E - / 10.00 IU/LB

Now I will say that I've switch both the Del and the CR coop to tubs of water rather than the nipples. Yesterday the Del coop laid 7 I think. Up til then it was 1 or 2. The CR coop was laying zip but there have been the occasional EE egg. (The CR coop has 3 CR's and a RIR and some EE's for now.

The CR coop is on Purina and all coops don't get scratch everyday or only in the evening.

I also my drop the Agway protein back to 16% rather than going with the 21% and see what happens. Perhaps the hens are too fat.

The Queen spent the night so I'm on early since I can't watch CBS this morning. Windy out today and I have some trees that creak erriely when I'm out back. I expect some to fall any day. There is one that might hit the hoop I'm afraid.

" Snow is cold rain is wet, chills my bones right to the marrow............................ "
Be careful about dropping the protein, it may make them go into a molt...just a thought. Marans need the higher protein and will probably stop laying as much.

Thanks I did not know that.

They've been laying well but the Dels. 4 today. The CR ( which having laid in months) and EE's too. No eggs today. The BR's hens are soup they've never been good layers and having laid in a while either.

I don't rememb er the name, but it has a beaver on the package. If a package sweats, its because it wasn't dried completely. That is why I switched. I bought Noble when they first opened, its 2 miles from my house, but it was wet and had chunks of bark in it.

Where did you get it? CM has shavings on sale next month but I'm not sure it's the Nobles too. They have another brand that is more dust than chips. I don't like it.

Very windy and cold today. Spent the better part of an hour shoveling. I don't mind the chicken run, that I do out of love, but the driveway is a whole other story! We spent a bunch of money on a plow truck after our old one kicked the bucket. We put an engine in it and it is still is having issues. Now there is a gas leak and DH couldn't fix it before he left for the week so guess who has to shovel..yup me. I hate snow it sucks!

On a good note when I went out to shovel the chicken run all the chickens were in their coop instead of the duck hut.

I have been leaving them in there for an extra hour in the morning. I guess that it worked. That and I put up some fleece on the small windows so that the wind doesn't blow through so bad. Perhaps I'll get a bunch of guys to help me spin the coop around so the wind doesn't go through it so bad. (It weights a ton).

My Roo still looks bad

. I have to check him out tonight up close. His waddles are starting to shrivel up. His comb still looks bad. If it is half it's size come spring I'll be happy. I don't think that I will ever have a straight comb rooster again. He was supposed to be a pullet, but he is a great first roo. The sad thing is there are some times that I look at him and I think...Yum I bet he would be tasty!.

Quote: I bought at my local mill. If I remember, I'll write it down when I go out tomorrow morning. So far, its working well, still soft & unfrozen..I can't wait until spring when I can clean out all the frozen junk & replace with the completely dry shavings. I'mm especially worried about my geese & ducks. They go out every day & sit in the snow. Can't be good for their feet. There must be a mill around Syracuse that buys shavings. TSC & that other place raise the price up so hight its ridiculous. There is a feed store around Syracuse area, called Lees. A friend of mine buys her feed there. Maybe google it & see if they have shavings that are guaranteed to be completely dried.

If they're laying the snow then chances are they're tucking their feet up under wings, that's what mine do. They insist on coming out of the coop but they lay down the minute they get out into the snow and warm up their feet.

I know about Lees and used to have it delivered when I lived in the city. They won't do it now. I think the truck went right by my house on the way to Lees.

The thing is even at the same price the cost of gas to driver there makes it more expensive.

TSC has smaller bales and is more expensive. They do price match but only if it's the same brand.

CM has shavings on sale next month for $4.99 3 cu. That is higher than last fall though. If it's not Nobles I won't buy any I think. I should write to Nobles about wet chips.

Evening all. Crazy day at work. People are crazy. I need chicken therapy. Wind is picking up. Supposed to be very cold tomorrow.

Nice hats Jlaw. Enjoy your birthday.

Aria--thanks for the info. I love my muck boots. I got the jobbers. I have slipped them on my bare feet and gone out in the frigid weather to take care of the cheeps and they keep my feet toasty warm. Best investment I ever made.

Luv--if your roo is a good roo, dont give up on him. He may not be pretty any more but if he is good with the girls and with you, he is a keeper. Trust me, I ate all my stupid, jerk, mean roosters. Bill is a good boy and the only one who made it this far.

Have a good evening everyone.

told them it was wet and they didn't care. They just dry it to a point then package. It's not cost effective to dry completely. My feeling is that it's not cost effective for me to have frozen coop floors
