NY chicken lover!!!!

Hey Rancher, now about these? They made their own pond...

The only difference between geese, ducks & chickens, is unlike chickens, waterfowl have to be able to dunk their heads in water at least once a day to clear out their nasal passages. Oh yeah, and their poop is really wet, so you go through a lot of bedding.

But, on the other hand, when there is grass, they don't eat anything else, they are good foragers and so I'm told, as long as they have access to grass or pasture, you can go through the whole summer without supplementing their feed. Unfortunately, they have a laying season, so don't lay eggs all year, but there are some breeds that lay almost 3/4 of the year. That's why I got Cayugas, they say they are one of the best layers. Time will tell...

I was going to get Khakis because from what I read the lay nearly as much as some breeds of chickens. It gets so wet here when it rains ducks seem like a natural thing. I have no doubt they should do fine, as long as I keep them away from the creek. I figure a small flock of half dozen should be okay.

I like the geese but they're more than I can afford. Toulouse I can but Sebastapol are much more. I see them more as ornamental than utilitarian. Am I wrong?

My roosters name is Trespasers Will. It's short for Trespasers William.

it's from Whinni the Pooh. The sigh over piglets door? Reeds Trespasers will. He said it was his grandfathers name and his grandma called him TW for short . The name Honey just reminded me of Whinni the Pooh and my rosters name

Didn't Pooh also say "the way to a friends house is never long"? or was that someone else.

I have 3 Cayuga ducks in with them. At first the ducks were afraid of them, but now I noticed that they will walk up to them & push them out of the way,,,funny to watch. They hang out in their own groups still though.

Do you think it will be ok for me to get a sebbie or two then? I have a flock of four drakes so should i get ganders or does the gender of the goose not matter? I guess a female goose could easily get a drake to leave her alone.

Lol

lol I don't know.... Maybe.
I think I'm going to make a Trespasers Will sign and put it over the door to my coop. I think I'm always going to have a roo with that name. Does anyone else have forever chicken names? We always have a WCB Polish named owl and if we have a Silkie roo his name is always Rumplstiltskin ( Rumpy) and a hen named chubakah my daughter decided she is always going to have a black n white chicken named bawk bawk moo lol

One of my partridge rock hens was killed last night or today :(
Not sure what did it but the body was under the coop and the breast meat and meat off the neck was gone and that was it. I couldn't see any prints but it also snowed last night a bit so I think I may have locked her out of the coop :hit

Very frustrating....

I have recently lost a duck to hawk and it was very heart breaking. I had raised him from a duckling and I was very attached.

When I had a similar attack, it was a raccoon. Ate only the neck & breast, finicky little sh_t.

Get a trap.

Agreed it probably was a racoon. It was definitly not a hawk. Hawks eat the back and back of the neck. They dont usually touch the breast

Ok, I have some really nice roosters I am willing to give away.

My original Coronation roo, 2.5 years old. Has a bad eye, but it does't affect him. He is a real beauty. Wattles have frostbite. I have 4 of his sons,so don't need him, but would prefer a nice home, not stew pot.

A very nice black copper Marans for egg production only. He has a side sprig on his comb, which prevents him from being breeding quality, but otherwise, to produce dark layers, is good.

Mixed cockerel...Orp & Wyandotte

Black Copper Marans cockerel. On the dark side feather wise, but if you are looking for dark eggs, he will work out.

I ran on a lot of boys this winter, and need to cut back. NPIP tested flock.
