Hey Rancher, now about these? They made their own pond...

The only difference between geese, ducks & chickens, is unlike chickens, waterfowl have to be able to dunk their heads in water at least once a day to clear out their nasal passages. Oh yeah, and their poop is really wet, so you go through a lot of bedding.

But, on the other hand, when there is grass, they don't eat anything else, they are good foragers and so I'm told, as long as they have access to grass or pasture, you can go through the whole summer without supplementing their feed. Unfortunately, they have a laying season, so don't lay eggs all year, but there are some breeds that lay almost 3/4 of the year. That's why I got Cayugas, they say they are one of the best layers. Time will tell...

Lynzi are you guys coming to see the new restaurant? I passed by it yesterday. Can't wait till it opens but I won't be stopping in for at least a month or so till hopefully it calms down some

Yes we are. We try to get to every new open. Friends and Family dinner is tonight I believe, VIP dinner is tomorrow night (all the managers and staff who want to attend from the other locations, plus their significant others) I'm dying to see what the did for window treatments this time because my mom didn't get a call for this location. She sews and she's done the curtains for Troy, Newark, Stamford, Harlem and Brooklyn. Pretty much ever since my husband started working for the company.

Hmmmm didn't see any curtains hanging in the front windows lol. I can't wait to see what the inside looks like. Apparently they have been trying to get cool stuff from around our area to put inside

Are these yours? They're so pretty. IF I were to ever add geese in the future (and by future I mean when purchase/build our next home with a barn for all the things I want LOL) I would add these. I like they're curly feathers. How is their temperament so far?

Quote: Yes, I got them Thanksgiving. Their temperment is suppose to be one of the friendliest geese, except, like all geese, during breeding season. I'm getting them friendlier by tossing them bread occasionally, but I realize since they weren't raised by me, they will never be "pets". I intend to hatch out all their eggs & befriend the gosslings from day one, so I have "in my pocket" geese. They are beautiful to look at & I might get a solid grey from them if I'm lucky, the youngest gander is split to grey, so I have my fingers crossed...

We may try again to get a hen.

As for the chicken memorial, it is a bit odd because the representative from PETA didn't have a relationship with the birds. My former cat is in an urn in my dining room but we had a relationship. I figure like this, my cat lived with me and slept in my bed for 13 years, that's longer than any husband I ever had

so she was deserving of a proper final resting place.

That's why I want to hatch my own ducks. I want to see if they will be less "nervous" around me if I have them and hold them from day 1 versus the ones I got from the feed store and spent two days in a box. I don't see my ducks ever eating right out of my hand however my KC drake did eat right from the bucket I was holding yesterday before I poured it into their bowl.

It's snowing again. When in the world will it stop. There is only about 40 day's till spring and it can't get here soon enough. I have some major shoveling to do this afternoon. The run fence has gone from 4 feet high to less then 2 feet with all the snow that has accumulate and where I have shoveled the run. I should have thought about it better then to shovel all the snow to the edges against the fence. Have to figure out how to fix it cause right now anything can just hop over the top of the fence. If nothing more I'm going to get the snow shoveled from around the outside, then see how I feel, may have to take the show out of the run. I can only do as much as my back and shoulder can handle. You know what I need...A small snow blower! One that I can use in the chicken run and in the dog run. Then I could even be nice and clear a path for the propane guy I haven't done it in a while and I feel bad for the poor guy.

Hope that everyone is hanging in there. Spring is just around the corner.

At least that is what I keep telling myself!

Desiree, this is a Black Jersey Giant hen. She has willow/gray colored legs and the bottoms of her feet are yellow. She is about a year and a half old and just getting filled out to her full size. I got her from a breeder last fall and all five of them were last year's hatch. They have all grown out, not up, since I got them. I believe that because they are a large chicken they take longer to fill out, so your pullet may still have a lot of growing to do if she is a JG.
Thank you!! Taking a closer look I think they may be. My bigger hen has yellow under her feet. The smaller one is harder to tell. But they look like her. I think my confusion may be how fast they grow. I hear everyone say eat one year old birds but I feel like some of my one year old birds are still growing in size. Ill figure this whole chicken thing out someday. I love them!! I'm setting eggs soon :) I haven't seen who is laying but my hunch is my NN hen. She is the most active. I think out of 17 hens only one is laying right now. I'm so ready for spring !!!!!!
