Where do you live? Some folks on here could possibly hook you up with eggs locally.

Stony (who remains amoung the missing) prostulates that chickens with genetic defects die about the age of 7 - 8 months.  Seemingly for no reason at all.  I am starting to believe he might be right, given the number of stories I hear about chickens "just dieing". (And my own experience of having 2 do the same thing to me, one after a "fixed" prolapse)   I guess it is God's (or mother nature's or Goddess's) way of making sure that only the most genetically perfect reproduce.

I am sorry for your loss and rejoice in the first egg experience with you.  Happy Hatching.

Actually, this hen was three or four so I REALLY have no clue what happened. She has been fine for the whole time I've had her. It's the weirdest thing. She was a very pretty silver laced wyandotte, my last one. Well, I'm off to give my birds some scrambled egg, set the new babies up in a brooder in the workshop, and head out to the seed swap!

Afternoon all. Got some meltage going on but the paths to the coops are still treacherous. Almost fell 3 times going out there and coming back. The terrorists were out wandering the pathways. Legolas and his harem were also wandering a bit. I just want the ice to melt before we go back into the freezer later in the week. Setting up the bators tomorrow and fixing up the downstairs to make room for brooders. Had to open the big door on little mans coop to let the wind dry out the litter in there. It was pretty damp. I will probably do it again tomorrow to dry it out good in there. I think they are happy they can finally get in their run without snow. Work was mad busy.

Hope everyone enjoyed the day!

Mareks manifests itself in many ways and birds who succumb to it usually do so early on. Stony is right about it though. This is why it's best not to hatch eggs from young birds because you don't know if they're carrying some defect until they are months or even years older. Some birds are more prone to getting Marek and other diseases.

EVEN CHICKS HATCHED FROM SICK BIRDS CAN CARRY DISEASE. I say so folks don't think because they hatched an egg the chick will be disease free.

I am sorry about your girl, Py. Most generally prolapse reoccurs. It's not pleasant for her nor you. You have my sympathy.

They're a dollar a bag. You have enough for dinner and enough to share with the chickens. They do have other stuff as well, spinach and that kind of thing. Usually a dollar to two.

Apples are real cheap but I've jars and jars of apples sauce and frozen juice to make apple jelly.
