NY chicken lover!!!!

DW still doesn't know, but I'm worried it's so cold. I have two heat lights  them and they seem fine but it the light's go out I'll be crushed.  I want to bring them inside. Perhaps put them upstairs where it's warm.
Would I need heat lights on them if they are inside.  Are they like chicks that way?

I could just bring the whole bin in.  Or I could stash them down cellar with heat lights. But it's colder down there.  They're not all huddled together so I know their comfortable.

Yup. They need heat. Everything you do for chicks, you do for ducklings.

I thought that I was the only one that brought stuff home then told their spouse. Glad to see that I'm not the only one!

It is good to know. I may in the future, but not right now thank you I think that if I said something to DH about getting a incubator he would pack a bag and leave. He is taking it well, but I think hatching eggs would put him over the edge....I have to let this stuff sink in for a few months then I'll see what more I can get away with!

Just do what my wife does. "I told you I was getting an incubator and you never said I couldn't" Or " I told you I ordered it" Me: " no you didn't." Her:" Yes I did you just don't listen me."

Just tell him during a game he's watching on TV. He won't hear it but you will have told him.

Rancher - what are your thoughts on the ducklings?? Cuter than chicks??? ;-)

Luv - glad to hear DH got over it quickly. Whenever you want to add more just remind him that you are the one who is taking care of them all so it shouldn't matter to him until you start asking for his help ;-)

I have't decided yet. Right now I worry about them and this cold. They're in the back room with two heat lights over them. I'll feel better when things warm up and they get bigger. As a rule I like all animals. I just need the energy to take care of them.

I'll be drawing up placement of coops to make it easier to deal with them. My plan is to build a new coop for the Ducks but I don't want to share it till it's done. The hardest part is placement in the yard. Some way I can make a circuit around the yard. I've had enough of winter and this freeze is getting to me. My joints hurt.

Thanks again for taking delivery and bringing them to me. Now if you plan to go to TSC and buy anything and need a partner to take half of the six required I'll see what I can do.

Now I have to tell you about Red Green. He's an EE rooster that hatched from last time. He's got Red feathers. Today I was out at the coop and he and his hatch mate both come and get around my feet. They come to me for protection but Red he lets me reach down and pick him up and hold him. He's so funny. I've never had a rooster like him. They both will stay near me and eat out of my hand. It looks like I will have to hang on to him.

I wish that worked...I'd get a bunch more animals!

Hello Chickenland, NY!

New bycer here, just north of Watkins Glen. Relative newbie to chickens (2.5 yrs) though I've had birds since '85ish. Current beak count is 9 chickens (Wyandotte, americauna, Orpington, brahma), a pair of Chinese geese, 1 African grey, and a female eclectus.

Hope you r all doing well & staying warm through this miserable cold weather.

Wondering if anyone out there has an extra incubator they could spair for April & may of this year. A couple of my girls are real broody & I'd like to put some fancy eggs under them, but need a backup plan in case they abandon their mission. I plan on buying a decent incubator for the 2015 season, but just can't swing it this year. 3 more months of nursing school left.

Please pm me if you have something I could borrow, rent, or buy for cheap. Perhaps u upgraded this year & have something sitting gathering dust.

Regarding the hubby banter: mine would be quite put out if he knew I was looking for a bator. I find it's a careful juggling act of what to tell him when. Sometimes the best thing is to just bring home the cute little fuzz-butts bc then he can't say no. I try to give him a heads up on some of my plans to keep him involved, but can't tell him the whole plan.

Kind regards!
