NY chicken lover!!!!

Hello Chickenland, NY!

New bycer here, just north of Watkins Glen. Relative newbie to chickens (2.5 yrs) though I've had birds since '85ish. Current beak count is 9 chickens (Wyandotte, americauna, Orpington, brahma), a pair of Chinese geese, 1 African grey, and a female eclectus.

Hope you r all doing well & staying warm through this miserable cold weather.

Wondering if anyone out there has an extra incubator they could spair for April & may of this year. A couple of my girls are real broody & I'd like to put some fancy eggs under them, but need a backup plan in case they abandon their mission. I plan on buying a decent incubator for the 2015 season, but just can't swing it this year. 3 more months of nursing school left.

Please pm me if you have something I could borrow, rent, or buy for cheap. Perhaps u upgraded this year & have something sitting gathering dust.

Regarding the hubby banter: mine would be quite put out if he knew I was looking for a bator. I find it's a careful juggling act of what to tell him when. Sometimes the best thing is to just bring home the cute little fuzz-butts bc then he can't say no. I try to give him a heads up on some of my plans to keep him involved, but can't tell him the whole plan.

Kind regards!

Welcome to the thread
, What I did was a trial run . I gave her 2 eggs ..We have one baby chick .
I do have a little giant ...I dont like it ...I didnt have success with it ..I tried it a few times .I paid 20.00 for it
I was keeping it as back up also
I would rather do a broody.. let her worry about the eggs ..
well..I still worry... but a lot less .
I am in Jordan ..about a hour & a 1/2 away
Maybe we can trade ? borrowing it for a couple chicks or ? What kind of eggs are you getting ?
Cute Ducks at the Back Door ...

Welcome to the thread! If you can, let your broodies handle it. They are just better than us, period. I could sell you a Little Giant for $20 - I upgraded to a brinsea and don't really need it. Plus, the fact the brinsea can hold almost thirty, I know my homemade could hold at least forty packed tight, and that the LG can hold 49+, gives me bad ideas XD But I think you're quite a ways from me.

Love the geese, by the way! I adore my goosey girl. She's visited Metella (and Petco). I'm getting her a friend (actually, she arrives next week) and I'm so very tempted to buy her Sebbie eggs to hatch when she goes broody...yep, I have the morefowl. Careful hanging out in here, you'll catch it too!

Thanks for the welcome! Great to be here.

My star broody is a buff orpington. She went broody 3x last year and then again in January of this year. I gave her a half a dozen barnyard mix eggs during her second attempt last year and she did amazing hatching and brooding. I'm going to set her up with a better broody house this year. The other broody is a Wyandotte who is not even a year old. She went broody in January as well. I tried to tell them they had the wrong season, they are just so determined when they get the idea in their little heads.

I'm hoping to get a hold of some barnevelder eggs for April. Later in the season I plan on putting Narragansett turkey eggs under them. If I find buff African goose eggs, I will be very tempted. Yep, already have a bad case of morefowl syndrome:).

Geese... yeah. They are awesome and difficult at the same time. I would love to fill my yard with geese, but that would likely send my husband over the edge. He doesn't get along with my gander and won't listen to my suggestions of how to get along with the bird. He got pinched once and decided the bird is evil and should be thrown in the oven. He was just trying to protect his goose and be in charge, and he's really just nervous at times. They have so much personality and are so talkative. Love them.

I expect they'll come down when they're hungry. Remember animals like to be lead not chased so try to coax them in with a little food. If you can shut up all the others and leave a dish of food way to the back, or a trail just inside the run to the back , they might go in and then you can sneak around and shut the door.

I reckon they'll be safe for the night.
Well, one of them was hungry enough to come down from the trees and forage

I just happen to see him out the window and I slowly walked up and spread some corn out, and a little more, and a little more, then put the feeder on the ground and walked back to the run. He ate for a bit, turned around and walked all the way back and right into the run (while I was standing right there haha) and up to the coop door

Morning all. Six here this morning so I was moving a little faster as I was hauling water! Everyone was demanding out this morning. The terrorists surprised me with 5 eggs already! I walked in the coop and there they were. One froze and broke but the others were good. Firing up the bator tomorrow and will set eggs on sunday. Hatching out mutt eggs and rir eggs. Hoping for a good hatch. Still waiting for my blue silkie pen to lay. They are coming out of a molt so I have to cut them some slack. My splash silkies are laying.

Welcome to the newbie. Sounds like you already have morehens disease.

Morning All!
Well my Lavender hen, Layla is on a roll with laying. But so far only one egg from Jane the splash. I have a black frizzle in there now from ke5hde. Still waiting on warmer weather for my other 5 to ship. Getting some sizzles in splash and a pair of Silkie/Cochin crosses. They look just like smooth sizzles if you ask me.

Candled my eggs I picked up in CT and all 9 are developing! I can't believe it. Not a single clear egg. I removed my two Silkie eggs, those were clear which was kind of expected so that's fine.

To the NY chicken coop.

as for what to tell or not tell a spouse I was not advocating lying. Never lie to your spouse. Termites in your Troth/Trust and all that.

I know DW will not care about the ducklings but she has been going through some medical stuff and I don't want to stress her anymore than need be. After 37 years of marriage we know each other pretty well.
