NY chicken lover!!!!

Okay---here they are! Babies!!!!

Black sexlink roo. Roos are easily sexed by the white spot on its head.

3 Heritage rir chicks.

Heritage rir chick. Notice the chipmunk striping. I have more pics on my page in case you wish to peruse them. I am one happy chicken mommy. Final count is not in yet as there are more hatching!

You should keep her separate for a week or so ....somewhere where they can all see her .( do you have a dog cage ?)
Then put her in with them at night ..when they are sleeping ..
She will probably always be on the bottom of the pecking order ..and get pecked some
I quarantined her in the house in a big dog cage since for a while to make sure we are free of illness.. I've out her out with a divider between them during the day. Yesterday someone knocked down the divider and she was in with the others. They've pecked her a bit but she knows her place... The hardest was putting her to bed for the night with them. She doesn't really understand that she's a bird. She thinks she's a person(someone had her as a house pet) anyhow I put her in with them after they went to sleep and everything seems ok

Congratulations on your wonderful hatch. I marked three chicks in that one photo you might want to put a vet wrap band on. Keep an eye on these three!!! Look at those bruisers. Horn on beak, nice wide leg set, freak big heads, and you can see that good RIR type on them already. So happy for you.

Your Welcome ...I got the link from JWEBB & just passed on the details...

youll be over-run with chickens ...

How many eggs do you have ? I hope you have a HUGE Coop ...or do you plan on sharing these babies ?
One thing I noticed the more you have... the less tame they are ...the less you handle them .
Last year I got 11 various ones ....from Cass . I didnt handle them as much ..I didnt know which ones were ROOOs..Didnt want to get attached .
Knew they would die ...& be eaten . A couple of the Americana are vicious when they are in the nesting box ...( they are not even broody )
If they go Broody I am going to wear ARMOR !
My comets RIR , & white plymouth rocks are not like that ..if they are setting they let me take out a egg ...if I am there collecting

Yes, def plan on sharing

a lot of what I hatch. The Orloff I'll share as well but after they have grown and I see what I have to work with, cept for a roo I promised out already

and same here Gramma I don't plan on getting too attached to the ones that will be meat birds. I'm home all day, have lots of room. They all are going to have indoor coop in the Baxter building and outdoor fenced area to range. We are close to the woods and have too many predators on land and sky here to totally free range. I was hoping more of the LaBresse hatched but we got three. Hopefully we have one of each sex, 2 pullets and roo would be nice. One of the La Bresse is HUGE. We ended up with 9 silkies and the 3 La Bresse.
My 7 turkeys all died before they made a internal pip for some reason. Really sad about that but I'll try again.

I guess all in all this wasn't too bad for my first try hatching the chickens. 9 out of 15 silkies hatched and 3 out of 6 La Bresse. Could have been worse.

Cleaning the hatcher really good and letting air dry good. The next chicks set to hatch on the 27-28 so I guess I should get them in the hatcher by Tuesday.

These are the three LaBresse. So pretty and fluffy, the one is just huge, he was really crammed in the egg and did hatch right on time..

Aria here are the 9 silkies we ended up with. I'm not sure now I have any blues.. I think I have two types of white and the buffs. So glad to hear you are getting some eggs! these are the cutest little stinkers.

And the giant LaBresse he is the hulk.

Same here....way to many eggs, too few customers. I wonder if putting up my "Eggs For Sale" might increase my sales? But, to be honest, most of my past customers were men. Now I have nothing against men, but I don't really like having men just showing up at my door asking for eggs. I live in the country and can't even see my nearest neighbor's house (can see the chicken coop tho.LOL) I will have to remember to take eggs to my Mom to take to 'work' with her on Tuesday.

I get $2.50 for mine and some people think that is high. I say "$#&^* them, feed is getting higher almost monthly"
If you can set up a "self serve" situation that might work. Perhaps a small fridge in the garage or something like that. I doubt you'd lose much with that as long as you're home.

I gave a dozen to my mom this week too, but she prefers store bought because "ewww you don't wash the eggs". And we keep a dozen in the fridge for 3 weeks for hard boiling, so they are "old", yet she keeps store eggs for 3 weeks. *eye roll* did ask her though if any of her seniors would be interested, so may have a lead on one more customer. We get $2.50, one person insists on $3 for them. Amish neighbors only want to pay $1, so won't get any business there. We have been mixing the cheaper egg layer with the hearty hen to balance nutrition with feed price. And some cracked corn and oats. Must be they like it, laying machines are working.

I always wash the eggs. As for the Amish, don't even get me started. Except to say they're people just like all the rest. I don't know why we think they're any different.

Lots more chickens keeping people so the supply is up. It will take time for the fad to wain. Too, folks don't choose to spend more money on food but rather other stuff.

I'm having a hard time down sizing to half of what I've got. Just cuz there's so much crud out there and I want to run a closed flock. Lose a rooster and then it's bring in a stranger or hatch in the middle of winter. Plus you can't work on improving a line with just a hand full of hens.
