NY chicken lover!!!!

Jenny, The Silkies are BEAUTIFUL. We are new to chickens and we have and plan to only have Silkies. We love them.

Thanks to you and Grandma, I have been in touch with Jeff and making arrangements to pick-up some of his eggs. You hatched 7 out of 12. I really am not qualified to know...but i would say that is FINE. Now interesting to discover....how many hens?

We have NEVER hatched and are looking forward to a good hatch. I do know that Blues sometime turn out to be so dark ...they look black. Enjoy them, They are therapy for us.
We have camera and we watch them. Very relaxing. Regards, Aria

Looks like everyone is having good hatches. Love all the baby pics. You are probably right, Rancher. Right now everyone is looking to start keeping chickens. Its when you are out there in subzero weather trudging through a foot of snow with food and water two or three times a day that reality hits. Or when you are cleaning the coop, or trying to get rid of cooties. Most people dont want to deal with that reality. Unfortunately for the animals, they dont get a say in the matter. However, we shall hope for the best. I understand about the whole trying to improve the flock thing.

Every time I think the hatch is done another egg pips. Got another chick working its way out. Hoping they finish by tomorrow so I can clean up the bator and get it ready for round two!

Dh made some fabulous chicken chili for dinner and my scratch corn bread is almost done. Smells good! I would share but there is only enough for two.

Thanks for the sentiment Aria and good luck with your hatch. Its so much fun!

I gave a dozen to my mom this week too, but she prefers store bought because "ewww you don't wash the eggs". And we keep a dozen in the fridge for 3 weeks for hard boiling, so they are "old", yet she keeps store eggs for 3 weeks. *eye roll* did ask her though if any of her seniors would be interested, so may have a lead on one more customer. We get $2.50, one person insists on $3 for them. Amish neighbors only want to pay $1, so won't get any business there. We have been mixing the cheaper egg layer with the hearty hen to balance nutrition with feed price. And some cracked corn and oats. Must be they like it, laying machines are working.

I wash my eggs & sell them for $3/doz to friends & co-workers & sometimes give them away as well.

I had someone come back to me later telling me that "her friend" dumped a whole plate of my eggs freshly scrambled into the garbage bc she wasn't sure if I had a rooster and the thought that the eggs might have been fertile and she could be eating chicken embryos mortified her.

I let her know that no I didn't have a rooster w those hens & yes I collect eggs daily so even fertile eggs would not develop at all. I wanted to but did not tell her about the conventional store bought eggs are raised in disgusting small cages where the roosters are ground up & fed back to the hens. It is mortifying to me to think of eating conventionally produced eggs from tortured hens.

My BIL will not eat local brown eggs bc he's reminded that they come out of chicken butts. He prefers to buy his eggs from Walmart bc then he doesn't have to think about the chickens.

Everyone has their reasons.
