It seems that while I was away DW had some test done. I didn't know til I got home today. She didn't tell me. The short version is they found breast cancer. We go tomorrow to talk to the surgeon. Please keep her in prayer.

I do hope everyone else is doing fine.

Thanks in advance,

Rancher
Welcome Back , So sorry about your wife . Lets hope they found it early enough ..so it can be all removed

Rancher--my thoughts and prayers with you and DW. I had that scare about 4 years ago. Fortunately it wasnt cancer but I certainly understand what your wife is going through.

Babies are hatching! The incubator room is full of cheeping babies and its only just begun. Loving every minute of it. I am very happy with the way my heritage rir chicks are looking and the mutt chicks arent bad either. Have to set up the brooder box for them tomorrow. Hoping it warms up enough to get the brats out for a while. They need some room to stretch and flap and jump and fly. It needs to warm up so they can go in the coop! Have to stain and paint it friday to freshen it up. I have learned this year that patience is the key for hatching. This time around my temps in the bator were a little high (100.4 at the highest)) when we had those warm days sunday and monday. I was worried that it might have affected the chicks but they are hatching nicely. Hopefully my silkie chicks will do just as well.

Have a good evening all.

A Pretty Dude ! We like long Stories !
The story is that this rooster is an imposter, lol.

Last year, my Mennonite neighbor gave me a clutch of eggs to hatch in an incubator I borrowed from him. My first foray into chickens, you know, I didn't want to start with bought eggs.

Out of that hatch, I got two barred rocks (a roo and a hen) and six easter eggers (3 roos, 3 hens). Well, the two BR chicks were just the friendliest chicks...from day one. Most curious, first to venture towards my hand, etc. So I handled them...often.

The BR roo, named Bob, stayed friendly for quite a long time. I, none the wiser, thought of him as a "pet" and continued to handle him and coddle him. Well one day, out of the blue, that boy his puberty and suddenly, he wasn't so friendly anymore. In fact, he became a terrorist...lol. Anytime I went near that pen, or near the coop, he became aggressive towards me.

My husband and neighbor laughed their rear ends off at me...because I was afraid of a chicken (jerks). Oh, I tried "asserting myself" over Bob the Terrorist. But it made no difference.

I talked about swapping him out with my neighbor, who has some other BR roos. But we hadn't really settled on that. I was just going to put him in the freezer, but I really wanted more BR chicks this spring.

So, suddenly, Bob's attitude changed tremendously! In hindsight, there were a few things I noticed, but hadn't put two and two together. His crow changed slightly. He no longer CHARGED (first) out of the chicken coop the moment I opened the hatch door. He no longer chicken danced at the gate upon first seeing me every morning. Most notably, he wasn't flogging me every chance he got...in fact, he kept a wary distance!

I proudly thought, "HAH! I've conquered this rooster!"

A week later, the mennonite neighbor stops by for something. Casually, he asks me how Bob has been treating me.

I tell him it's the darndest thing, but he's been behaving for about a week! He bursts out laughing and laughing and then he informs me that he swapped my rooster with a nice one from his flock! Well didn't everything just make sense all of a sudden!

Ever since, we've called the imposter rooster, "Pseudo-Bob". He's a nice rooster. Only flogs me when I bother his ladies.

Thanks for telling, It was a good story! I was sitting on the edge of my chair waiting to find out what had made him change. Then had to chuckle when I read that it was a roo swap. Too funny.

Hi Rancher,
So sorry for the news. I wanted to pass some information that I obtained, unfortunately "after" a horrible breast biopsy a few years ago. The Wende Breast clinic is considered excellent. They have a coil MRI that can image the breast. I think a provider bulletin arrived last year indicating that this procedure no longer requires prior authorization per the affordable care act so it may be easier to get approved. There is another test that is not recognized by insurance carriers, but it's an option to avoid many repeat mammograms. It's called breast Thermography, and essentially evaluates the blood flow to the breast, bearing in mind that prolific tumors require an enhanced blood supply. I have one contact only for this test, it is Donna Farrell, RN (315) 736-0022. I believe that thermography is more common in the Albany area of NYS. I do wish for her the absolute best outcome possible and will definitely have her in my daily prayers for good health and healing.

Chickens are doing great! Fredo now knows that the beep he hears is the bread maker and crows until he gets some! He is darling. He went outside briefly during the nice weather, walked around looking a bit confused, and was very happy to come in. We didn't really want his feet to get dirty, so it was very good to have him back in where it's clean. Wishing all of you a Happy Easter!

Sounds to me you have a wonderful neighbor!

Here is my Barred Rock, "Pseudo-Bob" (long story). I don't know anything about breed conformation for BR, but he looks like a nice rooster to me. He's a bit dusty, hence the light brownish coloring on his breast. Also, our BR hen plucked some of his breast feathers.

As roosters go, he's diligent with his hens, and only ever gets nasty with me when I pick up one of his girls and she squawks. I have some of his fertilized eggs in the incubator and they are developing. Let me know if you want him!

There is a "Plymouth Rock" thread if you are interested.

Thanks for telling us the story .
My one Roo I made of... as a baby ..became mean at maturity . he had a different look in his eye ..a mean look .
He took on a hawk that came to visit us one day ...he regularly also took me on .
I got so I could see it coming & would catch him in mid air
his brother ...who I also made of as a baby ...didnt have the mean look ...just had a intelligent look ..no meanness what so ever
