NY chicken lover!!!!

Afternoon everyone! I've finally started separating out breeding groups. Bleu the marans rooster has his marans hens and a leghorn and an EE now, and now that he's out of the other coop I can put my cochins in it and I'll be in business! As soon as the new hoop coop is 100% done Bleu will get two more EE hens so I can start making olive eggers too. If I could find an Ameraucana hen to put under him I would be ecstatic. But one thing at a time. Now if I could just get my ducks laying I would be over the moon. But they're being brats along with half the laying flock. Guess the days aren't long enough for them yet, slackers.

I put in an order with a friend to a hatchery a couple months ago. The post office called today and said the chicks were there. The hatchery was supposed to email when they shipped them and didn't. Surprise! Now we need to rotate the chicks we hatched and clean up the brooder for the newbies (5 dark Cornish) plus the ones we have hatching this weekend.

Following this thread, I thought I was the only person on the planet (or at least in NY) that didn't have cute little baby chicks. But look what Mama Wyandotte hatched out:
400

There will be a swap meet in Auburn April 26th. Vendor space is $10. Buy or sell. Proceeds go to the Fingerlakes Feather club, although it says Fingerlakes,it is a poultry club with members in Syracuse, and east to Westmoreland.

There will be a Poultry show on June 1st in Syracuse at the fairgounds. This is one of 2 shows that are local. Please support this show. There will also be youth showing & showmanship. They will also have sales cages for selling your extra poultry. Cages are $4 for 4 birds. Great venue to sell & show your poultry. 50-50 drawing, raffle items, lots of fun & informative. My hens like to lay where everyone else does .I have 6 nesting boxes . Most like the 1st one on the right .
Chickie See Chickie do ...chickie get in trouble too .Not sure if it is the instinct to reproduce or the instinct to Copy ...LOL
Maybe A Bit Of Both .
I have fake eggs in the other ones ..to encourage them to spread out ..sometimes it works sometimes it doesnt .
Little TT chose a nest box on the end . Other hens did contribute to her pile .
Going Broody is a hormonal thing .So at some point they arent laying anymore .
Once they start laying again ...thats the end of being Mommy ..TT changed overnight after she started laying again ..then she pecked at her chick if it got near her
CASS - you got a Sumatra Roo ...I miss my Sammy so much ..

I have 2 wonderful Sumatra roos. Do you want one? If you do, I strongely suggest the blue and black one....for no other reason than genetics. The second one is all black. I have SOOOOOoooooo many roos. I mean like 4 times as many as I need. If you want him and are coming to the picnic I will bring him. (bring a box, I use a laundry basket for my smaller chickens )

Lovely day today. Got the empty coop stained. I will repaint all the trim tomorrow. The hatching continues. i now have 30 chicks hatched out. Had to change the feeder in the brats brooder as they are too big now to eat from it. Everyone had some time out today. Hoping its warmer tomorrow so I can put the brats out for a while.

I have 3 of the sweetest friendliest red sexlinks that I am looking to find them a new home. If anyone is interested please let me know. They are now 1yr old and are great layers.

Pretty sad tonight. First a dear older friend of mine passed this morning. I think that she had to be in her 70's.

Second I broke down and bought a dozen white eggs from the store. My kids were freaking out last night that they weren't going to be able to die any eggs this weekend. I told them that I would get some paint and they could paint some of our brown eggs. I only have 10 dozen in the fridge. (I have to make some deliveries tomorrow) They said that it wasn't the same and that for next year I would just have to get some chickens that laid white eggs. DH just rolled his eyes.

I think I may repaint my large coop. Something light. Perhaps school bus yellow or red. It will still have the same green trim though.

The girl I gave eggs to, feathered sexed the Birchens and said they were roos and I believe she is right.

I'll be moving the chicks to a coop tomorrow.

We saw DW's surgeon today. He appeared concerned but she will wait til she has an MRI and we will know more. She will have surgery though, we don't know how much.

FYI, she hasn't had an Mammo for a few years and this could have been caught sooner. Ladies DON'T PUT IT OFF. IF YOU HAVE NOT HAD ONE DO IT SOON. THERE WAS NO HISTORY IN HER FAMILY THAT WE KNOW OF SO DON'T GO BY THAT.
