NY chicken lover!!!!

It is a Cayuga duckling

That's cool! I thought they hatched all black! I would've guessed swedish with that white bib. Guess I need more duckling experience :) Perhaps I can be forgiven since I only raise one breed. Will they lay black eggs for you?

Thank you to everyone for your well wishes. I've been spending a lot of time with my birds because they make me happy so over the next few days I may natter on about them and post a ton of pictures. Hope you all don't mind!

Baking, so glad all the barred cochins made it okay, especially after the mix-up.

Actually it doesn't have a white bib it was the stupid flash I think on this phone but he is all black I noticed the picture also makes it look like it has white tips which it don't either I will try to get a better picture tomorrow with the other one that hatched today if they hold still that was the only one that wasn't blurry it kept moving and I was afraid it would fall off the edge. I have 4 more pipping so hopefully I can get one of them all together tomorrow.

Here's my advice. Others may disagree.

1. Nest boxes should be dark and small. Not much room to do anymore than get in and lay an egg. No hen gab fests, just do their business and go. While I do have hens that cram in with their sisters, nest boxes should only have enough room for one.

2.Chickens don't see well in the dark so a dimly lit or dark nest boxes can help. While the rule is one nest box per 5 hens, I've found that more is better. They may not use some but n a pinch they will.

3. I keep unfinished wooden eggs in the boxes. And I've been known to leave couple laying around. Chickens aren't as stupid as we think. They can learn pecking an egg hurts.

4. When I find a broken egg in the nest box it might be due to soft shelled eggs. I have a hen who insists on laying hers on the floor and those darn ducks go crazy when I go into the coop. I'm surprised they haven't broken it by now.

5. I add some oyster shell grit to the pellets to ensure harder eggs shells. Soft shelled eggs can break and invite an eating fest. Also soft shelled eggs can lead to internal laying. So if you find eggs are soft add some oyster shell immediately. I keep it on hand 24/7. You can add the dust to their water or feed, but be sure to add some to their feed.

6. Collect eggs often. I don't bother those in the nest at the time of collection but any hen empty nest with eggs get collected. Move slow and deliberate. kTalk to your chickens. They now our voice.

You may not need to know all this information but I hope some of it helps. It may just be a one time thing with her so don't wring her neck to soon.

I wish you well,

Rancher
I have a staff meeting every Monday morning with the ducks. Something tells me they only attend for the toast-)

One less rooster in the rafters :) The blue barred olive Egger roo I had from Tab & Trav went to his own flock last night. They needed a roo to keep the peace among the hens. He is a good boy, so glad he has a home. I'll keep the PR with the GLW for my flock and the obnoxious white EE roo will go be dinner. Actually caught him in the coop last night, man did he scream! I'll send the EE hen with him for dinner, her plumpness will make up for his skinny body. Need EE chicks though.

Morning all! Boys are saying its a nice day out. The hoodlums downstairs are busy destroying their brooder again. My little silkie babies are doing well and are quiet next to the hoodlums. Their new mommy is coming tomorrow to get them. I am very pleased with this batch. I have to candle whats under the girls out in the coop. Time to break the girl who is going to her new home at chickenstock time as well. She is a stubborn one. The brats out in the coop were happy to see me this morning. Even the boys let me pick them up and pet them a bit. This is definately another year of the boys. Anybody need a roo? I happen to have a few. Mutt roos and rir roos. I have some mutt girls as well. Bill will be going to the crock pot hot tub soon. He has been challenging me more lately and getting on dhs nerves. He has served his purpose and I have his replacements growing out next door. Im sure I wont get any complaints from the girls if he isnt around any more.

Stuffed--my staff meetings with the cheeps last only as long as the "coffee and pastries" hold out. Kinda like it is at work.

Lap--having a couples night at dinner huh? I hope they "dress" for the occasion!

Off to the pharm for more mayhem and chaos. They showed up yesterday and all attempts to remove them were rebuffed. Hopefully today we can make them leave. Have a good day everyone.

Keep them in till they lay ? or put fake eggs in there ....only collect real eggs
CUTE its a _____ chick?
Or a ceramic egg will work too ...they are so real I collect them if I am not careful

My concern with ceramic eggs is they'll be mighty cold in the winter time. Wooden eggs don't get as cold. Perhaps I'm wrong? Ceramic eggs would be easier to clean and wooden eggs don't last forever.
