NY chicken lover!!!!

Well it official this one grey hen is renamed Looney ! she attacked me when I went to get eggs out of the other nesting boxes ..
She got me good ! A pinch of a 1/2 inch circle ..she even broke the skin ..
I grabbed her & threw her out of the hen house ..

It looked like a egg massacre here today
..2 nesting boxes had smashed eggs .egg yolk everywhere & on the 2 eggs I collected ....What A Mess !
Ive decided to stop giving them milk for a while . On the meat thread they do that to fatten them up before slaughter .
I think they are getting TOO fat ...when I pick them up they have lots of padding under their vent .
I only get 3 eggs a day from 7 hens ...I will have to put them on a tread milll next !

Been really busy here my guinea hatching eggs I got at the chickenstock from Impulsive Farmer did real well out of a dozen I got 11 little Guinea chicks YAY the Mille Fleur Bantam eggs I won were a bust not one of them did anything, and the Goose eggs I got 3 of them are in Lockdown so will see if we get some little geese from them. Moved some chicks around today had some bigger ones that are all feathered that I moved out of the pen with the light and put some that have some of their feathers in the pen with the lights until they get bigger.

Rescued 2 little calves from someone in Canastota that were in some poor shape one is a Holstein the other was a jersey and unfortunately the Jersey didn't make it despite Iv fluids, and antibiotics but the good thing is my vet did turn the guy in to the law so hopefully they do something because he sould never be allowed another animal. The little Holstein I am praying makes it the poor baby had maggots in a sore on its belly and all over its butt and tail plus he has the starting of pneumonia but he is on antibiotics and is drinking milk and water good along with starting grain.

Going to bed been a long day and I have a dentist appt in the morning YUCK!

Sorry about the Cochin eggs. Here there are three under my hen and five in the incubator and all of them are developing. I set them a week and a half after chickenstock so they're due anytime. Perhaps the long car ride did them in?

just looked at the satellite view, very thick overgrown area. perfect for fox, coyote, deer. trapping might be the only way to deal with this. you dont have a gun, right? even if you had a gun you might be a little close to other houses. thats a good sized creek, so they probably have to cross in certain areas because of deep water, steep banks, etc. i can see deer trails on the satellite images, so theres definitely trails, although well hidden, old fencerows are also a favorite travel route. if you use Bing maps, zoom in on your area and then use the Birdseye view to get the best look. this is how i scout new hunting areas so i know where to look for sign. good luck if you need some more tracking, hunting advice let me know

Not a happy ending for my sister's dog. He had been found.... Shot in the neck, collar removed and buried in the neighbors yard!!! And he is not the only dog shot and buried on this sick mans property!! There are others also! The police are investigating.
Not what I was hoping to hear. I am so sorry for you sister. No dog should have to end like that. I hope the law finds that sicko under the jail.

I would be very afraid ..... he obviously gets his kicks and is right at the ready with a gun - each one may be legit but they are for sure treading the line ..... I can tell you from training and experience - he will go from the animals to people. Not only would I keep an eye open - but I would have a neighborhood meeting and even invite a mental health specialist to talk there ..... you want to be proactive on this and make sure everyone knows all you can about this guy ....

If you can get him help - that would be best .... include him AFTER THE MEETING in things but NEVER give him personal info or ideas about your schedules ....

This is dangerous - don't let it be another tragedy that people look back and think why didn't anyone do anything ......

My thoughts are with you.

Agreed. Sounds like a sociapath....no conscience at all.

Morning all. Miserable wet day again and both the terrorist run and brats run are just one giant muddy puddle mess. Not liking this one bit. Only got 10 eggs yesterday from 19 hens. Time to check vents and cull nonlayers. This weather isnt helping any either. I will have to check for cooties as well because this weather is conducive to cooties. I hope we get that sun that is promised for the weekend so everything drys out.

Today is friday the 13th and its a full moon tonight. This whole week has been horrible dealing with people and I was in an I hate people mood last night after work. They were just mean and nasty yesterday. Thank goodness I am off today. Serious chicken therapy required.

Rancher--hope you get that fox.

Kimmerjo--so sorry about your sisters dog. I hope the police find cause to charge this man. He sounds like the kind to escalate things.

Nutty---hope you can bring that calf through. People should have to suffer the same way they make animals suffer. There is no excuse, especially for the neglect/abuse of babies.

Played with my silkie babies last night to relax a little. I think at least half are boys. They are all too cute, running and jumping and flapping their wings. They all have fabulous foot feathering and their coloring is going to be quite nice!

Abby (my cat) is very happy I am home today. She is cuddling with me getting some attention. Her friend , the phoebe, is not around to tease her. Probably sitting on her nest, which she built under my kitchen deck. I looked in it the other day and she has babies. I dont bother her nest, just looked in it this once. I expect she will probably raise two clutches in it.

Stay dry and well everyone.

I usually don't have any problem picking up my broodies and grabbing eggs laid by others from the nest. Yesterday I got BIT and BIT good trying to grab the one large brown egg from the co-broody pair of duck and hen. I am like "WHAT is YOUR problem?" And then I hear something peep and I am thinking "OH NOOOOOOOOO, not the ducks hatching early toooo". Nope!!! A chick had hatched early in the box above and fallen out. The momma hen had just tucked it under her wing and kept it. LOL So she was defending her "baby"....which wasn't hers....

I was able to grab the chick without further injury to my hand and relocate it to the nest containing the Hen that had hatched it. So I have 9 Guinea keets, 2 chicks and 18 duck eggs to go. WHERE am I going to put all these birds?
