NY chicken lover!!!!

Morning All,
Got another Silkie laying as I opened up the coop this morning to another egg! I hope it's fertile. I don't know if it's from the blue hen or the other splash. I did catch my sizzle mating with the blue this morning but if this egg came from her and IS fertile it's most likely fertilized from the splash roo still who I have since removed because of his aggressiveness towards the hens and other roos in the pen. Not sure what I'm going to do with that boy I don't like him in that pen with the others. Plus every time I go in there he goes after me if I mess around with anyone. So no one is allowed in that pen if he's in there. My kids love the silkies and other bantams so he had to be removed so they can continue to go in there and pet their birds.

Also, looks like at least 2 of my sizzle chicks have the frizzled feathering!! I'm so happy! One of the little dark ones is going to be smooth and I'm still waiting on my favorite to grow out some wing tips so I can tell what that one is going to be. That one was the smallest one that hatched so it must be a little behind. Unless of course it's going to be a frizzled silkie and that's why I don't see wing tips like the others have. Can't tell yet so I'll have to wait a few more days on that one.

I've decided that since I have more bantams than Orpingtons I'm going to give my coop that Stony built me to them and give this one I ordered from CCOnly to the Orps since it's just the 3 of them. At least with the one Stony built, some of the birds can roost while the silkies will stay on the floor. I just have to alter it a bit and make something to go under the roost that catches poop and keeps it from falling on the silkies. DH is going to help me move it down to the Silkie's new pen on the side of the yard, although he's not too happy about it.

Back to setting some more rat traps today. I walked up the coops yesterday and a big ol' rat jumped out of this bin of old shavings I haven't dumped out yet. Couldn't believe it. I hate those things! And I'm seeing tunnels under one of my coops/hutches up there so he's obviously digging under there to get food. Ugh!

i'm sorry for your sisters loss, i hate to say it, but there are alot of grumpy old guys out in the country who still believe they have the right to do whatever they want on their land. i knew a family that lived next to a guy like this, used to shoot his guns at everything, my friends were concerned because they had children playing outside when he would start shooting. NYS DEC said he had the right to shoot guns as long as he was at least 500 ft away from any of the neighbors buildings. so, my buddy built a "dwelling" near his neighbors border. NOW the neighbor cant shoot that close because hes within 500 ft of the new "dwelling". now the police or DEC can charge him with a crime if he shoots within 500 ft of their buildings. So, maybe you can build a small shack nearby your neighbor, and prevent him from shooting close to your property, good luck

I too, am fighting this battle with rats ,mice and chipmunks, im thinking of trying that bucket mousetrap design i see, if you havent seen it , search BYC for it. i'm gettin tired of rebaiting traps, or gettin the bait stolen from the trap

Ugh this rain is putting me in a nasty mood and my chicks want out!!
I may have to come visit some of your farms next spring if anyone of you sell your silkie chicks, my local agway has a small group of silkie babies they are trying to sell, buy one get one even.. So hard to resist but my coop is full for now... Untill next year when I expand!! ( hubby doesnt no this yet..;))..
Stay dry everyone!

Been really busy here my guinea hatching eggs I got at the chickenstock from Impulsive Farmer did real well out of a dozen I got 11 little Guinea chicks YAY the Mille Fleur Bantam eggs I won were a bust not one of them did anything, and the Goose eggs I got 3 of them are in Lockdown so will see if we get some little geese from them.  Moved some chicks around today had some bigger ones that are all feathered that I moved out of the pen with the light and put some that have some of their feathers in the pen with the lights until they get bigger.

Rescued 2 little calves from someone in Canastota that were in some poor shape one is a Holstein the other was a jersey and unfortunately the Jersey didn't make it despite Iv fluids, and antibiotics but the good thing is my vet did turn the guy in to the law so hopefully they do something because he sould never be allowed another animal. The little Holstein I am praying makes it the poor baby had maggots in a sore on its belly and all over its butt and tail plus he has the starting of pneumonia but he is on antibiotics and is drinking milk and water good along with starting grain.

Going to bed been a long day and I have a dentist appt in the morning YUCK!

How sad for those calf's. :( Breaks my heart hearing about stuff like this. Thank goodness for people like you. I hope the calf pulls thru.

Yup, that's him next to the tracks. He has Phoenix, modern game, brown leghorn, bantam cochins. Lots of different ducks, geese, turkeys.
I just got home from Deatons, I bought 6 Royal Palm Turkeys and 8 lavender guineas. Buy 1 get 1 free
