NY chicken lover!!!!

On the meat issue, we buy our beef in bulk through local farmers that my in-laws know. The flavor is so much better and so is the price. We also buy pork local too. Surprisingly we eat less chicken because I don't want to butcher myself and rarely want to buy from the stores. I think I'm going to look into having a couple ducks butchered this fall.

Lynzii--I hope the move is going well.

Hope everyone else is doing good too.

I am having a wonderful day! DH suggested zip ties for my new pallet compost bin, so I will get some large ones, it will be so easy, and will look so organized!!!

I picked some blueberries this morning, and stopped at a yard sale on the way home, where there were big rolls of fencing. Left with one roll, paying partially in cash and partially in eggs! We have an agreement for ten weeks, two dozen a week! How cool is that! And a wire and plastic light duty cage that will be good for my broody, the current one.

There are spacing requirements for zoo animals. Buffalo almost lost their elephants due to space

I hate zoos, the buffalo zoo especially. I used to work at a group home and take the residents there with our season passes a lot for day trips. After around 5 visits one summer I started to get the general "feel" of the space and let's just say it isn't a good one. A lot of the animals seem desensitized and neglected. The bears for instance are in horrible condition. I remember the polar bear especially, because there was a very large growth of mold on it's back. Thinking back, I wish I would have taken pictures because a couple years later everyone is so excited to see the new panda cub. I feel like people just forget about the reality of the situation because of their curiosity and the cuteness of the animals, which I get. But zoos really don't need to be supported and whoever said there should only be 1 per state is so right! Hey who's seen black fish on netflix I was surprised how good of a movie it was.

I get that places change and maybe some of their exhibits have improved over the time since I've been there; but that experience helped me realize that zoos are so wrong.

I see one looking like it is trying to find a place to lay ...& my Roo has mated her ..so I can tell she is maturing .
The other one the pretty one with stripes ..I am thinking might be a Roo ..I swear I see ROO tail feathers starting .

Barbie is a Bob I think ! So pretty ! I was hoping it was a hen ! the only pretty one I really have !

What do you think ?

I think he/she is very pretty!

We now use a method I call "trick Fredo". He gets agitated when I'm fussing around the run area of the coop so I pretend to be doing something in the upper coop. He runs up the ramp into the upper level and then I go into the lower level to get whatever I need. Otherwise I wait until they are asleep and do the cleaning, water changing, and food replenishments! They wake up the next morning to all fresh water, coop, and food, as if by magic!

Whew dodged a big bullet tonight. was checking some eggs under a broody (I do NOT need any more chicks so she only has three eggs) and one egg was really really light. I didn't even bother candling, just tossed it in the woods. BOOM - now that was an exploding egg!! :)

Hope everyone has been well.. Still looking to rehome some older but still laying hens if anyone is in the saratoga area ... want to get down to about 30 chickens for winter. :)

Starting an online MBA soon.. whee!

County Boy - maybe you can PM Pyxis ... last time I talked to her she was looking for some .... but I don't know if she still is ....

I'd take some if they were full sized - but no room for bantams. Your birds always look so wonderful !
I have to post a pic of a little chicken I have from CB's eggs - it is so CUTE. :) I'll get the pic later if I can - it's so small (I prefer LF chickens) that I have to lift it on the roost each night to be with its "mother". :)

My concern with animals and zoos is that without zoos some animals would go extinct. If we had one zoo per state then monies would be consolidated and we could bigger zoos and spaces for the animals. Not "rooms" for birds but acres.

We went to the Montgomery zoo and I remember large areas for animals to roam. I'm sure I don't have all the answers and know everything about zoology but I'd hate to see the Panda disappear.

We just can't legislate other countries. This is why Japan is decimating the whales, sharks and other animals in the name of virility.
