NY chicken lover!!!!

Hi NY chicken lovers,

I live in Averill Park, NY (near Albany). A Speckled Sussex hen showed up in my yard about two weeks ago and has been in here ever since. Today, a second one showed up. I was wondering if any of you know anyone in this area that owns this kind of chicken so I could let them know that I have them here.

Wow! Lucky you........you'll have a flock in no time at all! Keep us posted on your progress.

Evening All,
Wow I read this morning and come back this evening to 19 posts. I don't think I've ever seen that many new posts in one day on this thread. LOL
Anywho, my new run is coming tomorrow. So I locked up early tonight and took down all the netting and fencing this evening. Also brought my two newest splash silkie hens home today to give them baths. I got them from Danielle (Adoravachick) at the Cobleskill show back in Sept. They are just gorgeous. I love her birds and I'm so happy to have a nice foundation flock started with her birds. Here they are;

this girl didn't want to stand up much to pose, so this is the best shot I have of her...

*waving hands wildly* They're mine. I'm sure of it. What I am not sure of is how they got across the river to your house. LOL

Have you found where they are laying their eggs? Do you have your own coop or are you collecting your flock one chicken at a time?

(Have you put a "found" poster up on Stewarts? Sometimes that works)

Haha, I don't have a coop and am not really planning on getting one. I would like to find the owner or, if I can't, find a home for them.

I have not found any eggs but I think she (they) are roosting in a row of pine trees at night. That is where she seems to hide when she is scared. She was just eating dropped bird seed until a couple days ago when I decided to go buy some chicken food.

I didn't put up a found poster yet but did post on craigslist. I can try Stewarts.

wny egger -

Glad you got the culprit. Weasels are basically solitary animals, so hopefully you got the chief offender behind bars, relocated (or sent along to the great forest in the sky)???

I don't believe youngsters would still be with their mother at this point of the year. Young ones are weaned by a month-and-a-half after birth and hunting on their own within a few months of age....so hopefully, this isn't one of a family that still has more customers hoping for a pass-thru your KFC window...!!

Here's a silly photo of Gertrude, my Brabanter, taken today. I assure you she is not dead, but merely sun bathing, which she loves!!

Her cresty poof has grown back and her neck feathers are finally poking through. She really blends in with the autumn leaves! I am considering a mellow companion for her; since Chumley died, she has nobody...still debating with myself over the pros and cons of an addition at this point.

Enjoy the weekend, everyone!

TOB
I like the pattern. Bet it would make a nice one for Frizzles.

Too, some breeds were developed for their camo pattern. Barreds can be difficult to see in the dark colors of spring. At least by old people like me. I suspect preds have less trouble.

Could be drop offs. Some folks are like that. I'm sure you'll find a home.

You don't have chickens? Have you seen a doctor for that?

My wife wasn't a chicken person. She called the doctor. She she said "take two chicks and call me in the morning."

I would say drop offs tooo. People are so unkind . Are you sure they are hens ? I have heard of people getting a chick & it turns out to be a rooster ..& they dump it somewhere .
I would say they found you because of the bird seed ...They were probably starving ..how sweet of you to care enough to feed them .
Is your area residential ? So they would be safe from predators in the trees .
It sounds like Cass would take them if you dont find who owns them

hi rancher, absolutely do not use restore made by rustoleum, it does not stick well and WILL definitely flake, crumble and chip, my porch looks absolutely terrible. rustoleum has been refunding peoples money, although i did not try to get the refund. i also looked up reviews on this product and i found about 90% negative reviews. interestingly enough, ALL the complaints were about the same issue, paint not adhering, flaking, crumbling. good luck
