NY chicken lover!!!!

hi rancher, absolutely do not use restore made by rustoleum, it does not stick well and WILL definitely flake, crumble and chip, my porch looks absolutely terrible. rustoleum has been refunding peoples money, although i did not try to get the refund. i also looked up reviews on this product and i found about 90% negative reviews. interestingly enough, ALL the complaints were about the same issue, paint not adhering, flaking, crumbling. good luck
Eek, we just painted our back deck this spring. I'll have to check which one, think we went with the non-Rustoleum brand. Didn't like the heavy texture of the Rustoleum one and was priced a little lower. So far it is holding up good. Dog nails and deck chairs haven't torn it up. We did make sure to use the special deck cleaner, rinsed really well and let dry a few days before painting.

Ditto here.

Now on the Squirrel front here.

I bought some new traps and one was this one.  I set it and put it on top of the chicken run.  Well yesterday I watched as squirrel and trap went running through the woods.  Not sure if it was on it's head or foot and have not seen hide nor tail since.  :lau     $5.99 down the drain or should I say up the tree.

Maybe you will find it this winter attached to a dead squirrel.

Could be drop offs.  Some folks are like that. I'm sure you'll find a home.

You don't have chickens?  Have you seen a doctor for that?  :/     My wife wasn't a chicken person.  She called the doctor.  She she said "take two chicks and call me in the morning."   :/

Hahaha!! I started with 2 chicks from a school project 4yrs ago and by the end of our 2nd year I had 50.

Lynzi777 your splash smilies are so pretty!! They tolerate baths?

Morning all just getting ready to head down and check the traps. Hope you all have a great Saturday..

yeah, we followed all the prep rules too, still had trouble. i read that the home depot sells a deck paint made by Behr that is supposed to be pretty good. i spent almost 300 bucks on this Rustoleum crap, it lasted about 2 months before it began coming up

wny egger -

Glad you got the culprit. Weasels are basically solitary animals, so hopefully you got the chief offender behind bars, relocated (or sent along to the great forest in the sky)???

I don't believe youngsters would still be with their mother at this point of the year. Young ones are weaned by a month-and-a-half after birth and hunting on their own within a few months of age....so hopefully, this isn't one of a family that still has more customers hoping for a pass-thru your KFC window...!!

Here's a silly photo of Gertrude, my Brabanter, taken today. I assure you she is not dead, but merely sun bathing, which she loves!!
lol.png
Her cresty poof has grown back and her neck feathers are finally poking through. She really blends in with the autumn leaves! I am considering a mellow companion for her; since Chumley died, she has nobody...still debating with myself over the pros and cons of an addition at this point.

Enjoy the weekend, everyone!

TOB that wasnt my weasle ..it was the doings of demp..but thanks anyways ..

i have to admit before reading the rest of your post i was thinkinging "oh no ..not a nother bird taken..
so glad she was enjoying the sun while it last ..gunna be another nice day here, i think..

I would say drop offs tooo. People are so unkind . Are you sure they are hens ? I have heard of people getting a chick & it turns out to be a rooster ..& they dump it somewhere .
I would say they found you because of the bird seed ...They were probably starving ..how sweet of you to care enough to feed them .
Is your area residential ? So they would be safe from predators in the trees .
It sounds like Cass would take them if you dont find who owns them

They are definitely hens. I got them id'd online. I think the one was starving, she was just living off our dropped bird seed for over a week and acted so hungry when I started giving her real food. And now she's leaving great big poops in the yard too!

So, the one was here for over a week by herself. A second showed up last night with her. This morning there are THREE speckled sussex hens in my yard. I seriously don't know what to make of this or what to do. This isn't the type of area that seems safe to let them free range. Are they escaping? Is someone letting them out on purpose, thinking they are safe? Should I rehome them? Assume they are going to a proper "home" to roost at night? GAH!

Sounds a lot like either they live close by and are visiting, or someone decided they didn't want them anymore and stopped feeding them and they have gone wandering looking for food. Do any of your neighbors have chickens? They generally speaking don't go very far from home if they're being cared for well. Maybe ask around your area?

Also, who all in here keeps chickens with ducks and other fowl successfully? I'm having a debate right now about whether it can be done. I'm staring out at my backyard right now where ducks, chickens, a goose, and guineas are living and free ranging in harmony, as they have been for the last seven years I've had them, and I'm being told that you can't do that because it will cause disease and injuries. So do I just have a really weird setup that has somehow worked for this whole time or does everyone else manage to mix fowl too? I've just been told it's against common sense to keep them together and that telling people they can is spreading misinformation, so I just want to check here if I'm actually wrong on this before I keep telling people you can do it. I know turkeys and chickens are considered a bad idea if your area has blackhead, but I never considered that ducks, chickens, and guineas shouldn't be kept together unless the drake starts trying to mate with the chickens or something.

Ive heard, dont know if it is true that you shouldnt keep chickens and turkeys together. Something about deseases chickens are imune to, will pass it on to the turkeys and kill them. I do know the one time my father hatched out a bunch of turkeys under a black bantam hen when the turks were almost full grown they all died on him, didnt know why at the time.

That could have been blackhead, and I do know you shouldn't keep turkeys and chickens together for that reason if you have blackhead in your area, although I think JLaw was doing it successfully where he is. Come to think of it I haven't seen him in here for a bit. Hope everything is okay!

Oops, my bad! Yes, I meant to direct that question to demp, but hit the quote prompt at the bottom of your page. That's OK! Nice chatting with you, wny egger! LOL! And I knew I had to preface my pic of Gertie with a notice that she was just sunbathing!!!!!

That's such a shame...hope they can get a good home - no chance they can stay with you? You are kind to feed them!
