Yes, cows, 500lb chickens, horses.. they'd all be safe. Did I mention he's screwing everything together? With 4.5" coated screws? He ran out of screws Sunday night, and I suggested nailing. Got a horrified look
cool.png
He bought more screws last night.
I'm going to die of old age before this is done

He is enjoying building this though, so that is a good thing. I reminded him I still would like a small coop/run in the garden. He said that's nothing, lol. Yep, I can imagine he'll still be building when the snow is flying (not really, I hope!).

You have my heart felt sympathies. My coop is build to housing building codes. Yes, he knows them by heart. However he did get it done before I had chickens. But JUST before. If feathez hadn't agreed to keep the 4 I purchased from her for an extra 2 weeks, I would have had house chickens. LOL

Did someone meantion a screen door? OMG, I hope ray doesn't see that, cuz he has already suggested it might be a good idea in the summer. I told him to let the chicken go out in the run to cool off (It's in the shade.) I have double hung windows so I can open either the top or the bottom. He found the sections in the barn and framed them in to open both ways, just like a house. And they have screens. And hardware cloth. Maybe he wasn't kidding when he said I go live in the coop.

Don't let my husband see about the working windows. We are using clear plastic roofing for windows. Of course this will be reinforced by hardware cloth.

He is also concerned about ventilation, so there will be areas to make sure that there is adequate air flow. Then there is a skylight in the roof so it isn't so dark in there (because the screen doors and windows aren't enough.
lol.png
The screen door and screen window have a sliding wooden doors to cover them in the cold weather. At that point we will be going in the door to the old coop and enter the large coop via an inside door between the two. That door happens tomorrow.

Then the old coop will get redesigned with a brooder/breeding section with it's own outdoor run. Did I happen to mention the 1/4 acre area that will be fenced in with chain link? Yup. Fort Knox.

Actually I love the design.

Thanks DH.

My coop has soffet like a house for ventalation under the eves, the windows I can open the top of and a air flow through into the next room, where we can open the entire door to allow air flow in the summer and stink to flow out in the winter. He wanted to put in a sky light window to add light, but I talked him out of it, cuz it might leak (that's what I told him, but I am sure he would have installed it so it didn't leak)...and I am glad I don't have
more light because the chicken wouldn't go to bed before me if they had more light.

I think we should auction off our hubbies services. I'm sure there are lots who would love help designing and building their coop. AFTER your coop is done, of course.

PS Mine is screwed together too, with an ashpalt shingle roof. I screwed the floor down myself or we would still be building it. LOL

Hi guys. New to the forum and was told to check out the NY chicken lovers thread. Nice to know NY gets some representation.

We're 50 miles north of NYC, where the usual remarks from the city folk are are, oh, you live in the country!

I tell downstate folks I live "upstate" and they say "Westchester?" I'm like "no, in part of the entire REST of the state that is Upstate" I guess it's a matter of perception. (can you imagine those city folks in Plattsburgh NY? Now THAT is upstate. And they don't have a shopping mall, just a Walmart. Oh, and a wonderful lake)

I bought chicks from someone in New Rochelle. I swear I saw the Statue of Liberty in the distance. And there she was with chickens, roosters (ok they are chickens, but they crow), turkeys and an african tortoise. I think she had a little boy around somewhere too, but I didn't see him. Might have been nap time when I was there. You know that enclosed short structure outside the back door of the house that most people put their garbage cans in to keep them from coons? She used that structure as a brooder. Talk about thinking outside the box. LOL

My husband thoroughly approves of all of this. Our coop/shed has a metal roof, screened windows (gotta love the Habitat for Humanity store over in Pittsfield), a floor made out of marine plywood that is stronger than the floors in the blasted house, and is fully wired. Our next-door neighbor asked him, "what - you plan on living in this if she throws you out?" I can volunteer him for the auction!

I'll have to suggest a screen door. He'd be all over that.

More did you say more~...we all have chicks... and if I didn't welcome you! Welcome and all!..so you can have lots of chickens...

Thanks! I love this place - I'm surrounded by folks who will encourage me in my belief that just a couple more chickens wouldn't hurt.
lol.png

Luckily, I'm surrounded by chicken-liking folks. The people behind us got six the same week my girls came in. The guy on one side of us tried to raise free-range birds a couple of years ago, but said that it didn't work out all that well, as "they came by land, they came by swamp, and they came by air to pick them off." My neighbors on the other side have three kids who are absolutely in love with the chicks, and come over to visit them all the time. We're also in an agriculture-friendly area, to the point that the town laws actually encourage agricultural activities of all types "to preserve the rural character of the area." The sole restriction is that animals must be kept in accordance with good husbandry practices, which anyone worth their salt does anyway. All this obviously translates into MORE CHICKENS!
