NY chicken lover!!!!

It certainly sounds like he couldn't care less, so they probably aren't well tended or cared for. So.....they opted for your place 'cos you're a nice person

. I think the idea of taking them somewhere that they can be appropriately cared for is great - animals are like children - if you don't want to care for them, don't have them!! It makes me so mad that people just don't give a d... for the welfare of their livestock...

ok, rant over, hope you are able to catch them as planned.
Makes you wonder about all those people willing to take free chickens don't it?

My comment on the wandering SS is that my SS are well cared for and I'm amazed at how far they wander. We don't have neighbors so they aren't in anyone's yard but they travel all over our several acres. In comparison I have 2 barnie mixes and 1 EE and they stay very close to a structure - coop, barn, garage. All of them live in the same coop and have the same access to food and too many treats.

I wonder if it's the curiosity of SS that makes them wander more??

I laugh because I researched this breed and read they aren't very good flyers and should be kept in with a 4 foot fence. Nope, ours fly over the 5 foot fence. Thankfully we have lots of space for them within our property.
I hatched out some SS for my daughter who lives next door and then we bought 6 more pullet chicks from the local farm store. Yes to everything you said.

They fly over the fence and wander very far. They seem to be much braver than other chickens and I have seen them all the way down the hill and on the far end of my property, almost out of sight. We got tired of chasing them back and hope nothing picks them off while they are so far away from the rest of the flock.

Very nice. The door width is important for bringing stuff in and out. My wagon just fits with a bale of hay or straw. Might have made it bigger for the wheel barrow though.

Thanks, rancher. I did my research on BYC to see what everyone wished they had done and made sure I could get the wheelbarrow and muck bucket in and out of pens and coops. Everything is tall enough for me to walk in or has an access door for cleanout. I spend hours or days visualizing how to put things together before I start to build and plan for how I will feed, protect, clean, and catch. I will have to get a few pictures of the calf hutch coop I put together. It is working out wonderfully for the batch I hatched from the picnic.

That's was the first place my chickens ALWAYS ran and checked out in the morning-right under the bird feeder. They'd get everything dropped in the grass and then move up to the porch and pick up everything there. Miss that... :-(

bring them some bird seed as scratch ...they will love you ...

Heres a link about winter lighting

Glad my SS isn't the only one! I have just one SS hen. She is often off by herself on the opposite side of the house from the rest of the flock, just foraging. I keep telling her that a hawk will get her being out by herself like that. At least she is often near a tree or tall weeds to hide under. Silly bird.

Well I finally set up my lighting in the coops today. I bought a timer from Walmart but not sure I'm using it correctly. So I set it to be on now and turn off around 5pm to see if when I get there at 6 it is indeed off. If it's not then it's not working the way I want it to or I just have no idea what I'm doing. I want it to turn on at 4pm and stay on until 9pm. When I set it today it was just automatically on, wouldn't shut off regardless of how I set it. So we'll see.

Hope all is well with everyone!!!

Gramma - I see I'm already doing it wrong! Light in the morning, not the evening! Guess I'll have to reset my timer. At least today I'll know if it's working or not.
