NY chicken lover!!!!

What are your favorite NY Poultry Swap pages on Facebook? I'm looking for some others to peruse.
Sloansville Small Animal & Poultry Swap has been good as has Mohawk Valley Poultry Swap. Have gotten some great stuff cheap on these! (Plus went to my first poultry swap--was fun!).

I follow a couple farm related pages, often chickens for sale in that. I know a couple others here are also on Upstate NY Farm~Buy~Sell~Trade (same profile pic gives them away). Also follow an Upstate NY Farm and Homestead. I think there was an Albany, NY page posted in one of the groups. I've found them as one of FB's suggested groups , when you are viewing a group you are in. For fun I follow the Wyandotte Breeders page, just to glean information. And Chicken Color Genetics, which is insanely hard to follow unless you really know what they are talking about.

Crop impaction in one of my most wanted mix peeps - a young teen, but a mix of BC Marans and Faverelles ... and the Favs just always seem to have health problems

they are pretty - but not hardy - but it seems to have nothing to do with the weather ... gave an oil and outside massage treatment .... I am not going to work too hard to save her - as I find the ones I do this to - eventually die of something else - so I hope she recovers - will let them out in an hour and see.

She was a lovely deep black shot through with splashes of gold and super fluffy .... oh well ... I don't think I'll be keeping the Fav Roo .... he is very good quality pet in looks, fertile .... but the breed is just not fit for a scrappy backyard situation - I guess they are hot house chickens.

I'm from Windsor, NY just east of Binghamton. Any one in my area?

The way to a friends house is never long.

I've got a Maran hen with a sagging crop. It's been sagging for a long time but she seems fine. Can't say why.

Now I do like to make sure they've got plenty of insoluble grit, even though they're outside. I dump some in the food on occasion, just cuz. Can't hurt and might help. I have a spot where I dump a whole bunch so it's all in one area of the run.

I don't like to give them lots of greens, since they can be hard to work through the system. IMO. Course they eat grass and feathers and what not.

You might want to quarantine her and let her go a day without food to see if it goes down. Or just give her a little food and water.

You might be right about the cross and them not being hardy. Genetics plays a role I'm sure. I don't even know if this Marans of mine is laying but I don't have the heart to do her in, long as she seems happy. I wouldn't hatch her eggs if she did anyhow.

I wish you well,

Rancher

I follow the 2 Upstate NY ONES also. Not sure of any other around here..

I have been MIA with a feverish 11month old baby and buying a new to us used Amish built coop. It has 10 nesting boxes so I can add more chickens.

You never realize how many eggs you eat until your hens stop laying and you have to buy them.

Got woken up at 3am this morning to a raccoon out on the porch - the dogs were going crazy, cats were growling. Anyway, no big deal I think he'll wander off. Oh no!! This one wanted to 'nest' in the wood box, unafraid of me but growling at the same time - yikes!! Since he seemed to be behaving strangely, I decided to 'off' him

. Hated to do it, but couldn't have him hanging around possibly rabid........... Why do they look so cute and cuddly?? I know how destructive they can be, especially when they are sick. After talking with the neighbor, she said they had found a dead 'coon in the yard - no apparent cause of death......hope that's the last one

Craigslist always has chickens for sale. I found a guy selling (French) American Bresse breeding trios on there not to far from me. Thinking of getting some in the spring if he has them available again. Or on second thought maybe I should get some soon if I want chicks in the spring?

Somebody's got to be sore tonight! Regular egg on left is 2.1 oz, banty egg in right is 1.1 oz, monster egg is 3.6 oz. yikes!

In other news, NYSEG has been tree trimming in the area through Nelson Tree Service. Two of our big trees were removed, much to our dismay. I know it is for safety reasons, but still ducks to have them removed. Can't see them real well in the pics, but they added a lot to the other 3 trees.

That does stink. Did they tell you first?

We did get a postcard about tree trimming in our area a couple weeks ago. Then hubby happened to be home with sick little girl early last week when they first came through. The trees were first trimmed 3 years ago. Then couple years ago the one caught fire/scorched from the wires arcing, so NYSEG put a tube over the wire. Nelson had to consult with NYSEG for anything more than trimming. They called us Tuesday night to say they were told to remove. We did get them to leave the 10' stump, for the Dog's zip line.

Lap, that really changes your yard, it will take getting used to.
Yes, raccoons look cute, but they don't sound nice...never forget when a couple visited our campsite one night. My tent never felt so thin as while listening to them snarling and snapping, and they ate every minnow.
