NY chicken lover!!!!

My great horned visitor still comes by once a week to check to see if I left anything open or uncovered. Usually gives an angry scream after watching for a while and flies off ...

Oddly - owls are nesting and raising young around this time - so they must be in their most aggressive phase .... I hope mines stays around and snags all my moles and voles !!!!

sorry for your lost bird .... I also like owls - so I just let it know I am around now - but don't chase it off now that I secured my roos .... It only comes to check once in a while .... but now I always worry that some hen is going to be late to the coop and be outside during an owl check ....

sorry to hear of your lose...

i feel lucky so far in the last few yrs [knock on wood]i havent lost a single bird ..i no my lucks going to run out sometime tho..

i have had hawks land on the coop roof and watch the birds ..but i think it see's the netting over the run and relises it would get caught in it if it tried to get the chickens ..were i liove theres a ton of crows and they are always chasing the preditors away..i worry more about coons and fox and things like that ..the crows keep all the flying killers at bay for the most part..thank god ..

it was a nice day to clean the coop out real good and i hung some christmas lights ..which is always a big pain in the butt ..i wish they would invent, a light set up ,you just open the box and it all just jumps on the house ..lol

oh , i new just talking about being sick would come back and haunt me ..woke up coughing this morn ..ugh ..it wouldnt be the holidays with out being sick ..

do you use DE for mites ..i bought some in a half gallon container ..its gray ..i seen a vid somewhere that says to use only the white kind ..the stuff i bought was in the chicken area of the tractor store ..i am a little worried about using it ..i use a pop bottle with a hose attached to it to apply it ..i just squeeze the bottle and it comes out the hose ..any thoughts about using the gray stuff instead of the white kind..

Probably because I just saw the post. I have been very sporadic on here lately because i have had more duties at work. It comes with going from a teacher assistant to a full fledged special education teacher!

I buy bags of DE at TSC. It's food grade with the cow feed. I mix it equally with play sand and wood ash. I used the mix in 1/2 of my coops this year. I had no mite problems in those coops at all.

I also took to sprinklings variety of aromatic herbs in the coops and nesting boxes. The herbs are supposed to keep pests away also.

Apparently Lacie has found her wings. She can't really get off the ground too high, but goodness, it is really startling to have roman tufted goose suddenly take off and fly right over to you at chest level when you didn't think she could even get off the ground. She seems very excited with the discovery because she's taken to gliding around from place to place today. Silly bird.

is that the store in lakewood..?? i'll have to look around in the cow feed area..i seen others use the grey DE or what looked like the same label.. but after seeing a video that said use only the white food grade, i desided to hold off on the grey stuff ..i'll get some of the white if i can find it ..

congrats on the promotion..a teachers job is one of the most important jobs there is in my opinion..teachers spend more time with kids then most parents anymore ..so the in pack on them is huge ..so thank you

My husband works at the TSC in Warren, PA so thats where I do most of my shopping and how I know whats going on in the store.

I personally do not set foot in the Lakewood TSC store unless I absolutely have to, I feel that the management or staff are very customer service oriented or friendly. Even before my husband started working at TSC I would make the drive to Warren or Dunkirk before going to Lakewood.

I like the thaws,

I have white C7's in the Del run and last night, after closing up, I shoveled two wheel barrows full of stuff from the run, to dump in the compost pile.

Get them after the season is over and they're cheap enough.

I just shovel some of the stuff out occasionally. I add more shavings. I just don't have the strength to do a thorough cleaning of the runs. Most of it is broken down shavings, straw/hay and poop.

I have colored twinkles along the fencing and white around the garden. I just like going out there sometimes. The look so pretty when the snow is on them. I figure they don't use a lot of energy so why not. Predators don't expect an old geezer in his bathrobe to be taking a walk at 4 am. I've never seen any mind you. Could be one look at me and they're scared to come around.

I think I saw an owl the other day but can't be sure. It was flying through the trees in the woods. Not something I'd expect from a hawk. My real problem is those blasted squirrels. They just seem to multiply no matter how many I kill.

I swear by DE for mite prevention but others just swear.

I buy it by the 50# bag and dust everywhere at cleaning time. Rub it on your roosts too. Dump some in the nest boxes and dust your birds. If you see a dirty butt, take a good hand full and rub it in good. Birds to not LIKE to be dirty. I toss some in the feed too just cuz I like to do it.

If you can't find it near by you can order it on line and have it shipped right to the house. I've done that. It's not too bad a price to pay. At least IMO for the convenience of having the UPS driver put in your garage.
