NY chicken lover!!!!

Happy New Year everyone.
I recently moved back to the Binghamton area after many years away. I am a disabled veteran, and had to leave behind my 'mental health chickens' - half a dozen hens of several different breeds- with friends in TN. I doubt I will manage to get my birds back, since travel is kind of rough on me. So I wonder if anyone in this area has Buckeyes? My previous birds were Ee/Ameraucana crosses (moms were undocumented/non- show colors; dad was standard out of "show quality" stock... I just loved the blue eggs); also had a Dominique; Welsumer (who was insanely broody); an alleged Rock who was huge & birchen color. Had a Fr blue copper Marans awhile too, but didn't like her personality.

I'm in the city limits and am told my area is 4 hens/no roosters. Any tips while I get reestablished would be greatly appreciated since I was a city girl growing up and only got into chickens a couple years ago down south.
Thanks a lot, I look forward to getting to know you folks,
Trish "Catmom".
Welcome & Happy New Year from Jordan New York ..
chickens down south ? below the snow line ? I have a Nephew in S Carolina who is always bragging about how warm it is down there now ..
Most of us Here dont heat our coops ...we let the chickens do it ..
Use deep litter method for bedding

So they allow chickens in Binghamton, but Oneonta they are banned! Glad I live in the boonies and can have as many chickens and roos as I want. Buckeyes are a good pick with our cold winters. I don't have any now but the best layers I've ever had were Rhode Island Reds.

Welcome Catmom!
Housing chickens in the CNY winter is confusing. Their coop needs to be well ventilated, but not drafty. Kind of a contradiction, but I have decided it means that there needs to be openings near the top of the coop so that warm moist air can escape, but there should not be cold drafts coming in low or at the level the chickens are while roosting. Also, any openings should be covered with hardware cloth, not chicken wire to keep predators and mice out. I was being diligent and had good sized vent areas which I have plans to put a vent grill of wood or that plastic they sell in the home depot or lowes or wherever. But it was still open. One day I was standing in the coop and realized that there was a gale blowing through, so I cut it down a it, with those wimpy vent covers that are a large number of narrow openings with angled fins? over them. That tamed the breeze. The moisture is the real problem allowing frostbite. Vasoline can be applied to the combs as a slight barrier to the cold, but I always end up with greasy headed chickens.
But you will figure this all out, and it is only a few weeks until the feed stores and farms and members will have chicks...the best time of year.

welcome..lots of great info on these boards ..i agree with gramma. the snow and winter will be your biggest issue ..remember to keep the drafts out and not to close them up so tight the moisture cant exscape ..frostbite can happen pretty fast ..i use vasilean on their combs and waddles when it gets real cold ..good luck and again welcome to byc..

I'd be happy with enough money just to pay off my mortgage. That would surely make me happy. Yeah more would be great, but I'd be happy just enough to pay that off.

Hope that this new year bring you and your wife health!

You'd probably just buy more chickens.

Well now if you were closer I'd be more than happy to accommodate you. I'm sure you can find someone nearby to give you four hens. I hope all goes well.

If no one does give you some hens and you or someone you know is coming this way give me a shout. It's the least we can do for someone who helped us.

Welcome back to CNY!
How soon would you be ready for chickens? Are you looking for chicks or adults? I could be transport from Rancher in Syracuse to here in Marathon, as I am working on getting some hatching eggs from him. I am going to try the Valentines Hatch Along, so will pick up eggs before Jan 24 set date.

I could help out in the chicken train if you need me too. Glad to help out!
