NY chicken lover!!!!

Good afternoon all! First I would like to congratulate Rancher on his weasel kill. Only a few hundred more to go! Seriously, better to have gotten it in your garage than going to your coop and finding carnage. Speaking of, Nutty I am so sorry for your loss. Once again an owner who should not have dogs if they wont be responsable for them. The dogs paid the price for their owners failure to keep them confined and trained.

I am avoiding tsc at all costs because I know I wouldnt be able to leave without some chicks! Pulling out my incubators today and getting them set up and running. Setting eggs by the end of the week. Hopefully it will be warming up out by the time they hatch. Still waiting on my silkie pullets to start laying but my older hens are already laying for me. I let everyone out today as the sun is shining, the wind is calm and its 23. They are all enjoying walking around in the paths and the driveway, standing and soaking up the sun. I think they are feeling as cooped up as I am! The deer are by every night looking for anything I may have dropped in the pathways while taking feed to everyone. Its been a hard winter on them and its showing. Havent seen any more fox prints so Im hoping it moved on. The crows have been around a lot lately, looking for food so I havent seen or heard the hawk. I like having crows around because they keep the hawks away.

Hello to all the newbies I see popping up on here! Its nice to have you here. We love enabling you!

Lynzi--I hope you get into a new house soon. Sounds terrible where you are. Any chance you will be at chickenstock?

Ta for now. Gotta go check on the cheeps!

Wow saw a chickenstock ad on craigslist! Also saw this, sounds like a good deal but I live to far from the Buffalo area or I'd grab them up and add to the chicken math Lol! Heard La Fleche are actually better flavored then Bresse. Ad was from 28 days ago but if anyone is interested they might still have them.

La Fleche mature 7hens & rooster - $45 (akron)

Well...........finally winter boredom has hit the girls. They have a large barn to wander around in, so I've been lucky so far! I went over today to find my Dominique bleeding from her comb and while I was feeding all, 2 of last years new girls got into it with her! I'm stunned really - everyone seemed to get along just fine. I painted her comb with Blukote (minor damage to comb) and released her back with her sisters. I just went over there again and she and the 2 antagonists were at it again. Lots of puffing of feathers, jumping at each other - what's going on ??? At this point, I'm not really sure who started it 'cos the Dom was equally as aggressive. She's fine with me, allows me to pick her up, does not appear to be in any distress although she is very talkative today, which is unusual.
Any thoughts peeps??

Thanks Aria, and if I do ever make my trip up there and have some silkie chicks for sale I'll let you know, Maybe you can meet me off the hwy or something. How is hatching going? Are you still at it or have your birds taken a break from laying?

Well it looks like April 15th is the tentative "move in" day as of right now.

Nutty - I am so sorry for your loss. I would be irate! That is just such a huge loss, I really hope you can build up another flock soon. If I lived closer I would help - lots of people around here posting birds for free or for sale due to the owners not wanting chickens anymorea

Great Moving. Keep us posted. We are getting 1 2 or 3 eggs daily. My husband wants to
incubate eggs beginning of April. He LOVES the Mini Incubator. We had a LARGE one when we had our CALL Ducks and it was not as easy to hatch Call Ducks. Silkies are much easier.
We sold our Call Ducks all over U.S. it was fun.

Is there a rooster in the mix?. Roosters don't usually allow fighting among the girls.

DO YOU HAVE A PLACE TO separate the 2 newer girls for a few days ?
They may be trying to reorder the pecking order ...but 2 on one isnt really fair .
Or they just may be bored ..
Can you hang up a cabbage ? or a suet container in a couple different places .
Or sprinkle some scratch for them to dig through ..
Or just let them outside ..for a while ? Mine are out for about 4 hours each day ..

They are out in the barn daily, so there's plenty of room for all. I sprinkle scratch daily and there is usually peace in chickendom - that's why I'm surprised. I think I'll separate them for a while and see if peace is restored.

No roosters, we had one once but he went after someone once too often.............
