Thanks Aria, and if I do ever make my trip up there and have some silkie chicks for sale I'll let you know, Maybe you can meet me off the hwy or something. How is hatching going? Are you still at it or have your birds taken a break from laying?
Well it looks like April 15th is the tentative "move in" day as of right now.
Nutty - I am so sorry for your loss. I would be irate! That is just such a huge loss, I really hope you can build up another flock soon. If I lived closer I would help - lots of people around here posting birds for free or for sale due to the owners not wanting chickens anymorea
Is there a rooster in the mix?. Roosters don't usually allow fighting among the girls.Well...........finally winter boredom has hit the girls. They have a large barn to wander around in, so I've been lucky so far! I went over today to find my Dominique bleeding from her comb and while I was feeding all, 2 of last years new girls got into it with her! I'm stunned really - everyone seemed to get along just fine. I painted her comb with Blukote (minor damage to comb) and released her back with her sisters. I just went over there again and she and the 2 antagonists were at it again. Lots of puffing of feathers, jumping at each other - what's going on ??? At this point, I'm not really sure who started it 'cos the Dom was equally as aggressive. She's fine with me, allows me to pick her up, does not appear to be in any distress although she is very talkative today, which is unusual.
Any thoughts peeps??![]()

Quote: You are quite a ways from me ...I am west of syracuse ..
..Chicken stock will be a place to learn too...if you dont have chickens by then .
Fencing - we used horse fencing for our run - some use hardware cloth ..too
What do you want to know about fencing ?
They are out in the barn daily, so there's plenty of room for all. I sprinkle scratch daily and there is usually peace in chickendom - that's why I'm surprised. I think I'll separate them for a while and see if peace is restored.DO YOU HAVE A PLACE TO separate the 2 newer girls for a few days ?
They may be trying to reorder the pecking order ...but 2 on one isnt really fair .
Or they just may be bored ..
Can you hang up a cabbage ? or a suet container in a couple different places .
Or sprinkle some scratch for them to dig through ..
Or just let them outside ..for a while ? Mine are out for about 4 hours each day ..
No roosters, we had one once but he went after someone once too often.............Is there a rooster in the mix?. Roosters don't usually allow fighting among the girls.
