NY chicken lover!!!!

Don't know how far you all are from Clifton Springs, have any of you heard of The Poultry Hatchery? I'm pretty sure they were known as A&J farms last year, at least the address is the same. As A&J they were on BYC and said they will never ship, now they ship as The Poultry Hatchery. Their website isn't set up yet but you can look at a breeds and price list. I think they have more breeds available than the large hatcheries. They have two separate price lists, one for you pick up, and one for shipping.

Q: How can I incubate eggs that will hatch female chicks only?
A: A study in Australia (Australian Journal of Agricultural Research 11(4) 664 - 672) has shown that eggs stored at 40 degrees Fahrenheit (rather than the recommended 60 degrees) hatch out more females than males. That is surprising! However storing your eggs at colder temperatures before hatching doesn't actually change the ratio of male to female eggs. It has been shown that the male embryos are preferentially killed off by colder storage temperatures, while the female embryos handle the chilling better.

In other words, your overall hatch rate suffers if the eggs are stored at cool temperatures, but those that DO hatch are slightly more likely to be females. Unfortunately, there is no way to know which eggs will hatch males and which females, as you can read in the "related questions" below.

Taking care of the chicks today, I noticed that my little leghorn/orp cross, my last chick out of Honey, is actually buff barred! The leghorn must carry barring under her white. I already knew he was male, thanks to his comb starting to get red and grow, but even if I didn't, that would prove it. Technically he is a black sex link, although he's got no black. He is going to be beautiful.

@Pyxis How did your 'hero' rooster make out?

Still alive! He's having difficulty mastering walking since he seems to have no feeling in one foot and he can't seem to place it right and when he tries to take a step with that leg he stumbles. Hopefully he'll adjust to it quickly. Still not sure how much of the foot he'll lose but I think at least two of the toes.

I wasn't going to order from there, just was wondering if any of you that lived closer knew of them. Reading their thread awhile ago, while I understand what they were trying to say about not shipping in their argument, someone quoted their first comment and it did mention that they shipped. The hatchery claims they never had said they would ship and never would ever ship (their first post had been edited hmm? ) and reasons why. Now their under a new name and SHIP!?
I think they handled the whole argument a little bit odd for a business, certainly no people skills.

I have a order with SandHill Preservation Center. I was a little worried when I saw on their website that blue langshans were now unavailable for 2015 I put down no substitutions so I was thinking I wouldn't get any! I called them and his wife said the only notes he had on my order form was that the early hatch dates were sparse because of cold weather and had me down for May 5 hatch date woohoo! Looks like I'm getting white jersey giants and black and blue langshans!
