NY chicken lover!!!!

Greetings!

I live in orange county of the Hudson Valley area. :)
I'm looking to buy two companion chickens for my sizable garden yard. Would anyone be kind to let me know of places in the Hudson valley area in Orange that sells live chickens? I'll also be taking a trip to Manhattan this month (or next), and if anyone knows of chicken sellers/places there too I would greatly appreciate it.

Have you givin any thought to what breeds you are interested in? By pair do you mean 2 hens or a boy and girl?

Folks, what temperature (overnight) would it be ok to put chicks outside at night, without a heat lamp?  I'm talking 5 week old chicks.

Mine went out last week at 5 weeks cause they outgrew the brooder. There are 34 of them so the numbers gives them an advantage. They handled the two nights of frost we got. They also have good feathering and are feathering out even faster now. You should be able to put yours out now. Just watch them at bedtime to see if anyone is shivering.

I have 25 in there...most are nicely feathered, however I do still have the handful of birds that are partially naked. They have had the lamp off for a few days now, and...they were outside in the playpen during yesterday's storming. Most of them got quite wet, despite the tarp I put on one end of the playpen (because....dumb birds...huddled together on the NON-covered side...had to cover the whole thing).

I think this weekend I'm going to put them out there and see how they do. They are quickly outgrowing the brood box and a few of the boys are starting to (attempt) crow.

Do you guys usually leave them in the coop itself for a few days and THEN open the hatch to let them in the run? Or do you let them have full access to both your run and coop? (Assuming your grow-out run and coop are separate from your main flock...because I don't think the big ladies would appreciate the babies just yet).

I keave them locked in for a couple of days then let them into the run. Mine are in a separate coop and run from their parents. Just know that you may have to show them that they have to go back in at dark. Had to do that twice, then they got it.
