NY chicken lover!!!!

Most roos go through a punk stage and settle down .... if you take them out now - it would be harder to get them back again .... I say give it a week or two and see if they settle down.

Well maybe a little more than that - see if you can keep the food well spread out and give them lots of room to run and do those flying jumps so they get lots of running about .... Mine usually had about a month of being a punk and then settled down.

I would not think you could determine long term bad temperment yet in them - so don't loose a good roo by culling too soon.

Time to get out the canning jars and crock pot. If you have some you are looking at as potential breeders, make a bachelor pen and grow them out. Otherwise, its time to process them. Ive had lots of roosters, bare the scars of some of them. I wont keep any mean roos anymore, no matter what. Eat them. You will eventually find one that is a good, respectful roo who takes care of the ladies the right way. I finally have my Duke, who is completely trustworthy and treats the ladies like a gentleman should. First one in 5 years that i can say that about.

Unfortunately, I have no clue how to process a chicken...I def needed that demo! If any of you are close to me and process and wouldn't mind giving me a tutorial I would appreciate that! I may go ask the Mennonite farmer around the corner from me if he would.

I am going to increase the run length another 8 feet today. 40 square feet & sit watch the little punks!

Can we see a pic of Duke.??? I love Roos!!! They are or can be so beautiful... they can also be nasty little buggers.

I am so sad our plans to buy the log cabin didn't work out this spring. I could have had Roos a plenty instead my girls are temporarily living in the city of Rome in a fine coup and run, in the back of the garage. They don't seem to mind the view at least they have a nice big yard (by inner city standards) to be in.

I just saw on Facebook - 'pasture-raised rainbow eggs' $9.50/doz

AND they were brown & whites, no blue, green etc. - someone is making a killing somewhere!!

@Purpletie3 If you had a older rooster he would keep the young punks in line. Even a dominant older hen would wup their butts until they're older.

Well I may or may not have ducklings arriving tomorrow. I was supposed to be emailed when the order shipped but I was also supposed to be emailed when the order was confirmed and that didn't happen so I don't know that I trust that no email means no ducklings. I guess we'll see.

I manged to get the coop really cleaned out today thanks to the cooler weather. I also got the nest boxes all changed and fresh. The other five keets are doing well. Once they are a week old I'll let them and Ciel out of their crate to wander around the coop. I want them to be able to dodge any hens that are feeling pecky. I also apparently now have a pekin duck. My welsh harlequin drake, Hershey, vanished for a while, and today he showed back up for the night with a new girlfriend.

They may have gotten tied up in the red tape around avian flu. NY has pretty much closed its borders to poultry import, stopped all shows and all in state commercial sales. Private sales are still exempt for the moment.. We may be waiting a while for those ducklings!

And where on earth did Hershey find a new woman?!? Lol!!!

I've talked to customers from California and Washington working at my job and the eggs at farmer's markets over there are priced at $12.00 a dozen - and people pay that price!
