NY chicken lover!!!!

I've talked to customers from California and Washington working at my job and the eggs at farmer's markets over there are priced at $12.00 a dozen - and people pay that price!

It's all about the absolute economy in your area, the liquid assets of your customers and your competitors... in Rome you can get 3$-5$ a dozen yet in Clinton NY you can get 8$+... well to do areas are willing and able to pay premium prices.

So I guess I am allergic to straw for the second time handling it I have giant welts allover my wrists and arms... so pine mulch/ shavings it is... any other choices available???

Some people use sand. Aspen shavings are also fine but they are expensive and you can't usually find them in big bags.

Maybe it's the type of straw? Most that you see in feed stores is Barley, because it looks clean and yellow. Can also be made of oat or wheat, but tougher to find them. Or a weed mixed in with the straw is causing the allergy. Only time I use straw is in the nest boxes, right now using hay instead because that is what I have.

So you use pine the rest of the time. Flooring and all?

I use pine shavings for the floor:

700

Works well for me.

I use shavings for the floor because hay or straw mats down and is hard to remove. Straw in the nest boxes, and yes, the type of straw matters. In this area I can get oat or wheat straw and I much prefer the oat straw. The wheat straw smells funny and makes me sneeze.

They may have gotten tied up in the red tape around avian flu. NY has pretty much closed its borders to poultry import, stopped all shows and all in state commercial sales. Private sales are still exempt for the moment.. We may be waiting a while for those ducklings!

WHAT!!! Does that mean if I have ordered chicks I'm waiting for from SandHill in Iowa that I won't be getting them??!!
They were supposed to be here May 5, I also put down all of June hatch dates ok. They only answer calls a couple days a week for only certain hours.
Time to do some digging!

Wait, is hatchery to customer considered private sales? Is it only commercial ban??

And where on earth did Hershey find a new woman?!? Lol!!!

I'll email them and ask about that. If that's what has happened, I'll just have them send them to my grandmother's PO box in Vermont about 10 minutes from my house, lol.
