NY chicken lover!!!!

HEAR YE, HEAR YE!

Got an email from a guy in Cicero looking for eggs. Eating I guess. Anyone in the Cicero area selling eggs? You can PM me or let me know here.

I have someone coming today and I expect she'll take all I have, so I probably wouldn't have any anyhow.

Love ya,

Rancher

Well I get to keep most of my chickens! I am only downsizing and having a friend take the louder 3 hens. We figured out that because the town does allow us to have chickens, the complaint would have to be dealt with privately because there is no ordinance against having chickens. Thank you all for your support!!

Unfortunately there is still a great deal of ignorance out there about chickens.

We tend to run from this issue with the town.

Dogs and cats IMO are a bigger nuisance. And less valuable to my survival.

They don't lay eggs and they can't be eaten when you get tired of them.

Have you ever stepped in a pile of dog poo and you don't even own a dog. I have.

Have you ever worked in your flower garden and stuck your hand in a pile of buried cat poo ? I have.

Ever lay in bed trying to sleep but for the neighbors dog barking? I have.

Give me a neighbor with chickens any day.

I do love cats and dogs but agree with the point that cities and villages need to wake up to the importance that raising local food has in our world. Many countries thrive because they encourage backyard gardens and chickens and such. (A friend just visited Tahiti where this was true.)

Each species has their own value.

I own all three species and each is important to my well being and welfare. My chickens and feline would be ill equipped to protect me from danger. Yet my dogs have guarded my being, my children and home from external dangers, come to visit.

The feline cannot protect me from thieves or intruders nor can she lay an egg, however, she kills every vermin that comes into my home or coop.

My chickens will provide me with eggs and chicks, if I choose to keep a cock... yet they are ill equipped to protect me from man or mouse.

I have stuck my hand in the poops of all three species, and not the poops my own pets... and none of it was that particular animals fault. Animals do what they do. If a cat comes to visit your property, the possibility that she is chasing a rodent is very viable. and maybe after her dinner she pooped in your garden.
The dog that visits your property quite possibly could be on the tail of raccoon, a fox or worse.Dropping a poop notifies other predators, there is a guard present on his extended turf. The chickens may have been safe for one night, you may have slept through.
And lastly, I have been awakened by a barking dog, a howling cat and a crowing rooster... no neighbors of any species are quiet...

Congratulations! Never give up has always been a great motto for me!:hugs

Have you joined any of the Bee clubs?  Where did you get your hive?  Did you have help setting it up?  Did you invest in all the stuff to tend the bees and harvest the honey?

What do you charge by the jar?

Hubby is a part of the Southern Tier Beekeepers Club, meet primarily in Chenango Bridge, summer meetings are field trips to local apiaries and other bee interests. Also have hands on workshops to help us new beeks. There is one near you, think it is called Syracuse Beekeepers? They meet possibly at the Fayetteville Library. I remember coming across it, they have a website. It would be good to join and learn now, get started next spring if you think it is for you.
I know you aren't in Facebook, but I follow a couple farm sale groups, similar to Craigslist but in social network setting. I found a person that was downsizing about 40 min from us. We bought 2 complete established hives, included was the boxes, frames, wax, bee colony. Also bought a hive that had died due to starvation over winter, so had all the boxes, frames, wax but no bees. Set up consisted of moving the hive out of the truck.
The basic clothing and tools I got from Shastina Bee Co and Glory Bee, both from Washington state, and also from Brushy Mountain in PA. I had coupon codes for each and carefully compared prices and made minimum orders to get free shipping. Our final purchase was from Craigslist, an older gentleman was sick with cancer and gotten out of bees a few years earlier. Most of the boxes and frames are in bad shape, but may be able to salvage a few. One is styrofoam hive in good shape, we really want to try that one out. The main part of that purchase was a 2 frame plastic hand-crank extractor. Also got all his old gear, so extra jacket with veil, gloves and a few other pieces for harvest.
We now have contacts for new wooden ware, nucs, and queens if needed. Still learning.

Hi all,

I have some very upsetting news. I received a letter from my town code enforcement that my neighbor is complaining of my chickens being noisy and apparent "runoff" into their backyard. The town is requiring me to rehome them in one week. I'm reaching out to see if anyone can take my sweet girls! I have three isa browns, two EEs, a cochin and 2 silkies. I'm having a hard time with this, but I know everyone on here loves their chickens like I do. Please message me or reply. I am located in Elmira NY.

What are the codes in your town, are there noise ordinances, how is your town zoned.................... is it agricultural. If the town codes say you can have chickens I would definetly FIGHT back to keep them, if you're agricultural that will help too.

Make the codes officer show you in your town codes book where it says you can't have chickens ! FIGHT for your girls !!
