NY chicken lover!!!!

are you talking about their The chicks egg teeth (small, sharp points on the tip of the baby's beak that break off after hatching) to break a larger hole in the shell.

This is the only chick that looks like it has a dent near the nose/comb. Both my Brahmas seem less healthy than the others. They're smaller, anyway. I put sav-a-chick in their brooder and all 21 chicks seemed fine this morning. I'm hoping the Brahmas catch up.
I put a listing on Craigslist. No action yet. I'm trying to sell the mixed chicks, so that's probably going to take longer. I also want to list an 8-wk old pullet/cockerel pair and might sell my 4-mo old rooster. I thought listing the BCM would help get interest, but I might have to adjust that thinking. I have a few weeks to figure it all out. If I have to raise 'em all up, I'll have to remodel the coop a bit. We don't currently have the set up for 29 chickens.

Unfortunately there is still a great deal of ignorance out there about chickens.

We tend to run from this issue with the town.

Dogs and cats IMO are a bigger nuisance. And less valuable to my survival.

They don't lay eggs and they can't be eaten when you get tired of them.

Have you ever stepped in a pile of dog poo and you don't even own a dog. I have.

Have you ever worked in your flower garden and stuck your hand in a pile of buried cat poo ? I have.

Ever lay in bed trying to sleep but for the neighbors dog barking? I have.

Give me a neighbor with chickens any day.
I agree so much with neighbors dogs! Just seems that my new neighbor doesn't understand the benefits of having chickens. I plan on bringing him some eggs as a friendly gesture.
What are the codes in your town, are there noise ordinances, how is your town zoned.................... is it agricultural. If the town codes say you can have chickens I would definetly FIGHT back to keep them, if you're agricultural that will help too.

Make the codes officer show you in your town codes book where it says you can't have chickens ! FIGHT for your girls !!
Our town code does allow chickens. My code officer is very new to the whole owning chickens idea and homesteading. He actually called an animal control officer who has 20 of his own chickens and the officer said that his chickens are not noisy and don't smell! I'm SO glad the animal control officer had my back!

Good News !!!!! yeah ! I'm very happy for you

Well, it looks like we lost our roo today. His harem has stayed in the coop for most of the morning. I was out calling him and found a small pile of feathers......

I didn't really want a roo, got him as a pullet - haha! He was very good with the girls and respectful of people & extremely handsome - I think I'll miss him.

Each species has their own value.

I own all three species and each is important to my well being and welfare. My chickens and feline would be ill equipped to protect me from danger. Yet my dogs have guarded my being, my children and home from external dangers, come to visit.

The feline cannot protect me from thieves or intruders nor can she lay an egg, however, she kills every vermin that comes into my home or coop.

My chickens will provide me with eggs and chicks, if I choose to keep a cock... yet they are ill equipped to protect me from man or mouse.

I have stuck my hand in the poops of all three species, and not the poops my own pets... and none of it was that particular animals fault. Animals do what they do. If a cat comes to visit your property, the possibility that she is chasing a rodent is very viable. and maybe after her dinner she pooped in your garden.
The dog that visits your property quite possibly could be on the tail of raccoon, a fox or worse.Dropping a poop notifies other predators, there is a guard present on his extended turf. The chickens may have been safe for one night, you may have slept through.
And lastly, I have been awakened by a barking dog, a howling cat and a crowing rooster... no neighbors of any species are quiet...

You're entitled to how you feel and I respect that, please respect mine . I wasn't trying to start a debate, thank you. Mine was not so much a complaint against dogs and cats, I just am annoyed that chickens are given less consideration.

I'm quite sure Skinny Pete as we called him would have starved to death had we not fed him. Now we have another that showed up Saturday and considering where we are I'm pretty sure she's a dump. She too was hungry and we will eat her, when we're done fattening her up. Just like we did with Skinny Pete.
Cat and dumplings, Cat Pot Pie, Cat Cacciatore, Cat..........................

She can purr and snuggle in my lap all she wants it won't do her any good.

Well I do have some if you decided to replace him. Nice Delaware and C. Rocks.

You have my sympathy just the same.

Sorry to read about ur loss of a good roo. I'm sure I'm one of many on this thread who has a few extra roosters who would love to come protect ur flock should u change ur mind. Wish I had a Breda roo for u.

Well, I think I lucked out - it's been a few weeks since I lost my awesome roo Gomez to a hawk. Turns out one of his babies looks very roo-ish!! =) I only hope he ends up as good as his dad. The NN's kept me guessing, but this one is getting way too colorful to be a girl. :) :)

(rare that you hear someone happy about getting a roo, right? ;) )

boskelli - so sorry about the roo ..... as we always say - a good roo is like gold .....

I think 2 of Colo's grandson/roos are turning out with the great temperment he had ... crossing fingers as they are still teens - but so far they are doing just fine !
