NY chicken lover!!!!

I have 0 interest in showing and unless yall are NPIP and want to but from me I'm not bothering then.
I was going to show and may still but I wish they had their shows on a Saturday rather than a Sunday. I go to church on Sunday. But yes if you show you do need to be NPIP cert.

Somes state the laws vary. Some states will pay for the inspection and others you pay.

This is what I tell folks who complain about Organic foods. You have to pay to be inspected.

Now in other news.

I switched everyone over to Feather Fixer for the molting thing and they've filled out nicely. Big Bertha who never molted looked really bad this year.

I also switched my feed to Agway? Egg Producer 21% and I have been leaving a light on in all but the two half coops.
Today I got 6/6 from the Delaware, 5/6 from the C. Rocks, 3/5 from the Marans. Big Delores and one Ee laid an egg. AND a Marsh Daisy laid an egg. Too I think Buckwheat is laying as I've found an egg in the nest she sleeps in.

I may start turning the light off and see what happens. Though the half hoop birds are let outside and would get the daylight. I'm wondering if the birds in the run aren't getting enough day light. I may switch out some solid roof panels for more Clear plastic panels.

NY Ground?

Are there places that will just set posts for you? OR just drill the holes.
My FIL is retired and one of the things he does now is brush hogging, garden tilling and digs post holes with his tractor. He just digs the holes where the people marks and they have to do the rest.

Oh, another amazing example of dogs . Today while the girls were out a neighborhood dog came to "visit" them. My rottweiler Scrappy, who is so non agresive towards animals he snuggled with a skunk, charged the intruding dog. He was ready to kill for his chickens. Then again I did promise him grilled fresh chicken come process time. Maybe he was not willing to share his dinner. Lol. After the fact he pranced around kissing the girls and laid down with them for a bit.
What a good dog!

TSC ran out of the feed I have purchased since April. Rather than switch the littlest ones to layer I got a bag of Purina All Flock as I remembered a couple people here use it. As long as everyone does well with it I might consider getting a duck. Haha.
I feed all my birds the same thing. The chickens, ducks and turkeys are all on the same food and are doing fine.

Saw some ladies yesterday riding on the old Erie canal. It was nice. The grandkids loved seeing the horses. I hear ya on the old though. There are lots I don't do anymore. Like did post holes with my digger. It takes me a couple of days to do them. I used to hire a teenager. I still need two, maybe four more holes dug.
Was one of the ladies (blond older) on a big white horse and the other 2 on light brown ones?

Okay now I have a stupid question but here goes. I would like to get a couple frizzled hens... The ones I have found are mostly frizzled "bantam" Cochin... Do they come in a regular size hen ? If they do who sells them? I really don't want bantams because right now I have some really nasty birds that will be replaced when I have others to fill there spots. They are absolutely horrid to the rest of the hens and especially to my smallest bird Omelet. I am afraid everyday that they are really going to hurt Omelet. She was supposed to be a Marans but she is tiny... about the size and shape of a D'uncle with the coloration of a dark buff laced bird.
I have frizzles in both sizes. I have an older frizzled bared rock and some smaller bantam fizzled. I have 2 chicks that came from large eggs that are frizzled. I'm still waiting to see how big they will get, looks like on will be a hen and the other I'm not sure yet, but knowing my luck I'm sure that it will be a rooster. My frizzled rooster Woddy is the best and I have had several frizzled chicks out of him.

Some days my job is pretty fun. Just had a really nice conversation with a woman in SC who also has chickens, so I just got paid to discuss chickens for a while. She actually uses this site, so I told her I might bump into her on here. We'll see :)

Yes, She was very nice and brought that big white horse over for the kids to see. It looked to be a stocky work type horse. Another horse was white with black swirls. The other two horses were brown.

You've seen our place. Do you think he would/could drill holes down the wooded side? What does he charge? I figure if I could get the holes and post set, I could fence it later.

Hello everyone. It's Ben a while since I posted anything as I haven't been on much. I breezed through what I missed a bit. Sorry to all those of you who are suffering loss and or illness, you are in my thoughts and prayers. Congrats on all the new babies and those soon to be. I have been trying to get started back up with chicks but my first order was DOA, which was depressing as I got 4 extras and 2 were girls. I got a replacement shipment and all were alive with only one extra...a male. Both males in that order died the next day. I figurged I would order another breed and they could stick extra males in that order, but was struggling a bit financially at it is the holiday season, so never did place another order. Also I'm expecting child # 5 this summer. Then on a whim I bid on an auction and won, but there was a glitch and I was never notified that I won. I did eventually get that straightened out no worse for wear. Now today my new chicks arrived with my extra males as a replacement, but one chick was DOA. The others must have fallen on him and he went head first in grow gel and drowned in it . I found him with his face still submerged. Of coarse it was a breed I was excited about having again, an Isbar that happen to be blue. I have a black left. Another looked dead but was gasping and covered in dry grow gel. I figured it's a goner but set it up under a lamp and an hour later it is now peeping. It hasn't stood up yet. If it does get stronger do I need to bathe it to get the down fluffy or should I just leave it and hope for the best. I think it's a sulmtaler.

Yikes, sorry no one has answered you. I don't really know, but bathing chicks is dicey under the best of situations so I would probably go with leaving him/her dirty. Perhaps a pan with dust bathing material in it. Very young chicks have tried to dust in the bedding as I watched amazed. The little ones have no insulation, so getting them wet now is quite risky. Maybe some scrambled egg? And water. Some people give a bit of sugar in the water, I think. Hope someone who raises chicks comes on, I've been letting the Broodies do all the work for quite a while. On the southern NY thread someone had a lone chick who was not doing too well and she fastened a carrier for the chick in her shirt, nestled into her cleavage, to keep it warm. Good luck, and let me know what you do and how it goes.

Hello. Good to see u back on this thread. Sorry to read of ur chick shipment issues. Hope everyone that made it there survives. I've hatched a couple sticky chicks that I cleaned off w warm water. I just made sure they had enough heat to avoid catching a chill. I haven't worked w grow gel, so don't know how cement-like it is, but I'd prob be tempted to try & wash it off. Might hinder the growth of feathers underneath if left.

I am NPIP, and it makes showing birds in NY state easier. Yes getting birds from an NPIP person is a requirement, or you need separate facilities. If you are not going to Show, or have not had a lot of NPIP people contact you for birds, don't worry about it.

Where do u show? I'd like to get my birds to a show or two in 2016 but don't know where to start. Any suggestions for a greenhorn? Is there a favorite thread on byc to help w getting started w showing? Thx in advance!!

Okay so here's my take. One let the rest. Don't pick them up just let them sleep. Put some sugar in the water, which is what I do with all new chicks. The first drink has sugar to give them a boost.

If one is sluggish put it in a box by itself with food and water. Cover and let it rest.

I would not "bathe" a chick. I might use a damp cloth to clean off some of the goop but it will eventually clean itself as the fluff grows out. Truth is I never wash chicks, I just peel off any membrane or shell that is stuck as I can. I might dampen it a bit though.

I am sorry for all your trouble. You really have to order as many of a breed to be sure you get enough to hatch with. Again I'm sorry for your trouble.
