NY chicken lover!!!!

1. Do commercial farms pay this type of amount?

2. Your coverage is based on sales?

3. How do they know how much money you've grossed?  It's not how much profit you net?

4. A "rider" is an attachment on top of your other homeowners insurance.  For instance, if you had a pool you might have to have a "rider" to cover the pool. Or a dog. Even a swing set might require a rider.

5. How will someone who eats your eggs chickens etc. etc. prove they got sick from your food?

6. Do they require inspections every year?  ( I have a friend who sells eggs too).  Does it cover donated eggs?
1-3 &5 ) I have no clue, but if having insurance keeps me from losing my farm I'm paying for insurance.
4) yes the farm part is a rider. 6) no inspection unless a claim is filed against you. Yes donates eggs are covered to. So all the donations you make to the church are covered.

You do have to keep strick records. Every $spent on flock keep and every $ earned. Every donation needs a recept as well. Every egg carton you buy every bag of feed. You can average out what they drink a month and add their portion of the water bill to the math. If you hatch you can add the portion of your electric bill that goes on the incubator.

Or you can keep it super simple and just keep track of what is donated and what is sold.

We are going full farm business with it over the next few years but that's because we are going to have cows, pigs, rabbits and 2 acres of peoduce. The business aspect makes it more what I want, as donations to food banks and the school cam be made. No business license and insurance the school and food banks can't accept fresh food.

So in a way spending money now to get all set up makes it so I can help other families like mine. We are low income with 7 people . So save money by growing and raising our food. That also means I have extra that I can afford to help others at least start on a small garden and small meat animals. Or they can help on my projects and benefits if they have no place to do their own.

It boils down to I'm sick of seeing hungry people because it's more fun to be drunk. So no more monitory donations to anyone. The food I donate will fill a child's belly opposed to money helping parents get drunk or otherwise intoxicated.

Ok rant over. Happy thoughts.

Thanks I completely understand, why you'd want insurance. What with the venture you're on. I have neighbors down the road that have a fruit stand but I've not talked to them about whether they need insurance and all that.

I have another friend who doesn't do cheeses but does soap because they don't want to deal with all the NYS rules and regs. IMO NYS hinders a lot of projects due to all the hoops you have to jump through.

I also understand why you'd want to grow your own foods.

I also understand the monetary donation thing as well.

Hi all! Popping back in with a chick update! I am super impressed with Greenfire. I ordered 6 chicks and they sent me 14! Everyone arrived alive. Five of them were ayam cemanis too! Four of those are doing great. The fifth one has slipped tendons in both hocks :( Sometimes they can recover from this if you can keep them alive long enough that the groove that holds the tendon in place grows enough to actually keep it from slipping. So I'm feeding the baby from a syringe a couple times a day. We'll see. I also have a very helpful vet helping me on this. He told me he sees a lot of poultry. He had me text him pictures of the baby and he even called me after clinic hours last night to give me advice. I haven't ever taken an animal to see him and I'm not paying him for help so this is really impressive to me.

The other chicks are doing really well too. I got at least two CCL pullets, two others that I am on the fence on - can't decide whether they're pullets or cockerels. The rest are cockerels, so if anyone wants a nice CCL rooster let me know :) Pictures to come later!

Woohoo!

New here. Live in the mountains outside Albany NY. Small 7 acre farm with horses and goat, and getting chickens again. We had 4 completely free range before that lived in our horse barn. This time around they'll have a 6x8 coop w nesting boxes off the back and over an acre fenced run between electric horse fences and a fenced garden. Hoping they'll be more protected. Got a variety : Cornish X, Barred Rock, Cochin, Buff Orpington, Speckled Sussex, a few Phoenix, and some Silkie Bantams (for our little one). Plan to keep some over winter- but we are attempting to raise most for meat. Little one has severe corn allergy. (Can't tolerate corn fed meat/store bought meat on corny soaker pads) Does anyone know of corn free feed or recipes for feed? We will be getting them as chicks. Thanks!

WELCOME !

Predators are Foxy ...you may still need to watch them some
I would CAUTION YOU about feeding chicks anything but chick starter or grower ..
They can die if they dont get the proper nutritional balance .
Once they are grown it should be okay to switch them to a non corn feed .
A free ranging chicken has a varied diet ...she might not react at all to their meat at all
Where a cow may have been feed mostly corn .
1st year chickens will lay through the winter

Gramma those are some handsome Roos!
Well I figured out what was going on with the Roosters ..
I found Bobby dead this morning ..So he was sick ...and the 2 other Roosters picked up on it ..
So I only have 2 now so it should go a little smoother ..Rooster wise.
I wonder.... if he and Budge got into something or if it was just a coincidence that they died in the same week

So sorry about Bobby! If he was sick it does explain why the others started picking on him.

with a produce Only stand no he doesn't need insurance. If he sells honey or eggs or meat or milk or cheese, basically any animal products then yes he does.

ack!!! I'm so sorry. Maybe he had an illness they sensed and felt the best way to help him was putting him down.

Well today is the day my dog decided he wanted to have his testicles removed. That dirty rotten brat marked my house right in front of me. Now my husband can no longer protect that dogs manhood. He's almost 4 and has never done this before! !!!!
