NY chicken lover!!!!

@Purpletie3 I know Phoenixes look chipmunk colored too. Dorkings too but they'd have the extra toes. And welsummers.

So far out of my 6 eggs that made it to lockdown I have one black isbar and one chocolate green egger! It's just over day 21.

I hate the wait and see on this development. I was hoping it was on the invoice but they don't specify by breed- and I called them and it was we aren't sure what we sent you. Which is my first and only hatchery experience. So, I get to guess, LOL

Glad to hear your isbar and chocolate green egger is out. I have one of my Isbar/BCM's that lays a dark speckled egg and one that lays one that's khaki- very odd. Do you know what made the chocolate green egger egg?

I know welsummers and brown leghorns look like chipmunk chicks but I wouldn't imagine they would be in a 'special ornamental layer collection'.
I got the 'LeAnn's adopt me' assortment from Meyer's once, doesn't seem like it would be that hard to tell you what they put in them assortments. The polish were easy to pic out but clueless about the rest as chicks. I ended up with one pullet thinking and hoping for the longest time barnevelder, turned out to be a dark cornish, similar color pattern and red skin around the eyes, they don't lay very good.

Two others have pipped so I'm happy about that! I got the green eggers from KYT. The ad said its a splash/chocolate split cock over blue, chocolate and mauve hens. Not sure of breeds..the first one out is a very pretty light brown with a white belly

Welcome to the thread! I used to read a lot also- I fell in love with the coop building section and stumbled into this room!

Thank you! Whenever I have a chicken related question I can always find the answer on BYC! It's been very helpful. I love the beautiful coops too. I'm quite jealous of some peoples building skills. I do a bit of building myself, but I haven't attempted a coop yet, our house came with one!

@AmberKnits what breeds of chickens do you have, and getting??

Oh gosh...I had to go get my list....

Roosters:
Red Sex Link
Rhode Island Red

(But these have begun attacking my kids, I have 5 of those)

1 red sex link
1 barred Plymouth Rock
2 partridge rocks
2 golden laced wyandottes
2 silver laced wyandottes
2 austrolorp
3 Easter eggers
2 black copper marans
2 blue splash marans

I've ordered (all sexed females, I hope)
2 wheaten marans
2 blue laced red wyandottes

Look who sat still just long enough for a photo! This is the suspected male from the 6 ISA brown "pullets only bin" at TSC. Being friendly is good. Bad note, the smallest RIR chick was DOA when I went up for the 7pm food/water/butt checks. I had a feeling it was going to happen, just no energy and was abnormally small (compared to the other RIRS I got). 1 loss out of 16 is pretty good for a first timer, I suppose. Everyone else is doing very well - running about, perching on various toys, sleeping on toys - so I'm going to be optimistic.

Wow! That's a assortment!

Yes...I do have a chicken problem.

It's a long story, but since it's chicken related I'm sure you can understand...

I got my first 6 chickens from tractor supply. Three red sex link, three barred rocks.

While they were still in the brooder, I broke my foot. My family was mostly out of town except my two girls. It was mothers day, so they took me out to brunch (well...I took them, they were only 11 and 2). I had broken my foot the day before, and did not properly secure the dog before I left, he was uncooperative and my foot hurt. We came home to a massacre. Two chickens had been killed - one sex link, one barred rock. So it's mothers day, I'm cleaning up dead chickens in the house and looking for the survivors, who didn't seem likely to survive. Luckily, chickens are tougher than I thought and I was able to keep 3 of the badly injured chicks alive. The 6th chick had hidden in a bucket in the playroom.

So we are down to 4.....and two of those were roosters! Lucky me huh? I picked a male from a bin of red sex links. We found a good home for the barred rock rooster, a friend wanted him for his flock of barred rocks.

Now we have 2 hens, 1 rooster. We spent a long time, and a lot of money preparing for chickens and I was a bit annoyed to only have two hens.

I went back to Tractor Supply....and the chick days were over.

So, I decided to try mail order chicks from a hatchery. Except it costs a small fortune to ship less than 15. Well, we have the space and my kids like raising chicks....so I ordered 16, 8 varieties that I spent ages researching. They sent along an extra chick...and it was the Rhode Island Red Rooster.

Fast forward to this year...and a friend lost her lovely blue laced red wyandotte rooster and wanted to order another one - she was willing to pick up in Clifton Springs, but she had to get 6....and I got excited and ordered 6 with her order....they didn't have the Salmon Faverolles or Cream Legbars I was hoping for though.

Then I ran into the friend at the grocery store, after having seen Silkie chicks at tractor supply. She was considering adding to the order since she had recently re-homed her flock of ducks (they were very messy and a lot of work). I added the Silkies to the order (I need to build them a separate home...) and asked about Arucanas. Americanas were available, so I got some of those too.

You know....basic chicken math. 6 TSC chicks = 30 chickens

I thought the fluffy yellow chick in that bin was so cute last year, I took HIM home too (without realizing it was a him). Sadly 'Nugget' turned aggressive last fall at about 7 months old, he started by attacking the kids smallest to largest. Up until then he was a very nice rooster, we handled him frequently, he was the favorite. He attacked me when I went into the run to feed them a few weeks ago. He is headed to a good home, in a friends stew pot, next week.
