NY chicken lover!!!!

How has your egg color been.  One ebay seller is claiming very dark eggs with their Golden Cuckoos.  My BCM's start out their cycle with very dark eggs but I much prefer the coloring of the Golden cuckoo birds.  I have 2 mixed breed hens that came from my Blue Wheaten Ameraucana over a Dark Brahama hen and the resulting hens look like Golden Cuckoo hens with a blue laced pattern, and feathered legs.  Uh Oh, just looked out window and a Hawk is circling the chicken yard.

400

Some come out darker than others. I don't think they are bad but plan on working to improve color.

@Pharkas guy down the road from me has a 100' extension cord to the end of his driveway to a small fridge, not a mini fridge, little bigger for selling eggs. Sells fresh garden produce also. In a small produce stand covered. Big pine trees there so sun doesn't beat on it.
All on the honor system.
I don't know the regs, most don't worry about it.
@Chicken girl 15 I think knows the regs.

My chicken math has finally resulted in more fresh eggs than I am selling/giving to friends and family by word of mouth.  I am pondering a road side sign or stand with cooler.  We have a small pleasure horse farm in Onondaga county, town of Onondaga.  Does anyone know what regulations I need to follow to do this correct?  We have 4 children and are constantly coming and going so no one is consistently at home.  I was thinking an ice chest with an honor system can.
the regs are stupid simple for selling eggs. Call your insurance agent and tell them you want "farm coverage " so you can sell your fresh eggs, chicken meat and produce from your home. Wait for your paper to come in and sell. Or if you only have 3 or 4 dozen to sell a week, don't bother just sell. We have a lot plus we will do meat .

Can't really say but it might help to do some research and get insurance or see what they have to say. I wouldn't TELL them you have chickens just thinking of it, or "A Friend was telling me, (which would be the truth cuz it's me), and I was wondering about it". Get what ever you get told in writing, ( for a friend)

I know in my zoning/code it says I can't sell anything I don't grow on this land. I don't however know what the insurance company would say about it.

Hi everyone! I'm going to try to get on here more often. I've missed a ton so I'm not sure what's going on. How is everyone?

As for me, I still don't 100% know what I'm doing with my birds. So far the plan is to try to keep a chunk of land where we live now to keep them on, but that's not confirmed and won't be until a realtor comes out and looks at the place and tells us what it's worth.

On the bird front, I have three broodies already, all buff orps. Those girls are always chick crazy! I want to buy some eggs and put one of them to work for me but with the fact that I still don't know for sure where I'll be keeping them I'm a little hesitant.

I started the after winter coop clean out :sick. It's going to be a multi-day job, especially since it started raining on me today before I could get very far.

We purchased our farm over a decade ago as a private sale from a very nice elderly Woman whose Husband had run the dairy farm and passed away. Her Son, who was the black sheep of the family and who fought with his mother to the day of her death, thought he was to inherit the farm. Somehow when I purchased the Farm from his Mother, I also inherited the Fued that was between the Son and Mother. He lives a mile down the road and I own the land on 3 sides of him. On move in day I had to have the Sheriff remove him from my barn which he was destroying the plumbing and electricity in. It was strange that the Sheriff was taking his side and making it seem like I was the bad guy for wanting him to stop his dismantling of my barn (turned out the Sheriff was a cousin of the guy!!!). It took me 5 years and big $ to get the electric back in the barn. To this day I still can't afford to get the plumbing back in operation. For over a decade he hunts and trespasses all over my farm. I've had the police out more times than I can count but I always give him a warning instead of pressing charges, for fear of retaliation of what he could do to my property. Anyways I lease my land to a dairy farmer and anytime I take out my backhoe or my tenant farmer moves a piece of equipment there is a permit officer or DEC officer knocking at my door to see permits. The officers can't say who puts the complaint in (which they must follow up on) but they always seem to tilt the clipboard so I can see the name of the person making the complaint. Soooo, I need to dot my I's and cross my T's else I'll have some agency knocking at my door looking for paperwork. I'd like to sell eggs if I can legally do so without putting my family in jeopardy. On a side note, while cleaning in the main hay barn last year I found sales ledger books going back to WWI. It seems like they operated a general store out of a room in the barn. The ledgers were like a modern day cash register in which all the sales were documented. One of the biggest items sold was tobacco products.

I also have not been on in a bit. Sorry for those with illness or injury and who have lost birds. I had a visit from a fox the other day. My grow out pen is not fox proof and I have not set up a more heavy duty pen as I was waiting to see if we were moving. I'm thinking the pen will be up soon.

My hatches have not done well and I just pulled 18 non starter or early quitters from my bators. Good news is duck eggs, Polish, and crele Orpington eggs look good. There were a lot of loose air cells with the polish and duck eggs so I'm not to hopeful for a good hatch. Most of what I pulled were the sweedish flower hen eggs from 2 different sources. Anyone else get SFH eggs that did not do well with shipping. My duck eggs came with a set of SFH eggs and all but 1 are developing. I just heard that my crele/ Isabelle chicks from ultimate Orpingtons will ship this month:celebrate

I remember someone else said they may have some extra SFH chicks from GFF. PM me details. I also remember a dissuasion on possible meat breeds or projects. I did hear that Naked necks are great and Cornish too. I have a 17 week old white bresse pullet that is just over 4.5 lbs and my 17 week old bielefelder is over 5.5 lbs. the bresse has had great growth rate, so have the bielefelder cockerels but their more frame then meat at this point. I may try to combine them as a project. I'm also trying for a few more decent bresse. It will be interesting to do a grow out pen of just cockerels and keep on high protien diet for fastest growth.

Hopefully the weather warms up soon and the rain stops. I'm sure we are all looking forward to it.

Looking for some quick advice. I think one of my hens may have ended up with coccidiosis. She looked fine when I let them out this evening, and two hours later, she was laying on her side in the middle of the paddock. One wing was stretched out and I thought she may have been attacked. I picked her up and her mouth was hanging open. Am I on the right track with my conclusions? If so, is she too far infected to save? If I decide to cull her, is the meat safe to eat? Thanks in advance for your help.

Dave

Can't really say without more info. Cocci might not be the problem since it was a sudden thing. You could try medicine for Cocci but if she's not eating or drinking that would mean eyedropper. IF she is drinking I'd try some kind of "mycin" medicine. I keep Duramycin, Sulmet on hand and try just about anything.

I'm not real good at diagnosing things. To many chickens problems look a like.

Quarantine her, try to keep her eating and drinking.

That sounds way too quick for a disease. Are there any other animals in the paddock? Did something step on her?
