NY chicken lover!!!!

I HAVE 12 FUZZIES! !! YAY!!! They are all relaxing after stuffing themselves on starter and water. All flopped over on each other, well sort of. @PhoredaBurds your boys make the cutest little mixes. The leghorn babies are all speckled with black and/or gold. Tomorrow I will take pictures to post. The BA babies are stout already and the reds are super neat looking.

@Susieq2015 thank you so much. My daughter just about busted my eardrums she was so excited. She has already decided the fan victim is hers. Its official, I need more brooder space. I want more chicks. They are too cute.

Congrats :weee You'll have to post pictures for us!

from what I have learned about regulations there isn't too much in the way of "rules" as long as you notify customers that the eggs are fresh and as with any fresh protien there is chance of bacteria. That's where the insurance cones into play. You keep very close records of who buys your eggs so if they do try to come after you for getting salmonella from your eggs insurance covers it. The chances of illness from farm eggs is so low it's almost funny though. More people suffer illness from store bought products than farm fresh. Poultry or fowl coverage is a section all its own though. I would not feel comfortable with you just going by my word though. I am still in the very early stages of all of this. I've been insured 2 months and only had chickens for a year so I am not at all an expert in the rules laws, regulations or anything. However if you want to put my research to use than you can take what I told you to the town you live in and share what you learn here.

Our insurance on the farm is so expensive at first I thought, wow, $100 a year seems like nothing. Then I started to think and I must sell 33 dozen eggs just to pay for the insurance
(at $3/doz). If I was to use new cartons they run about $0.50 each. Cost of running small fridge or making ice daily for freezer chest. I would need to sell about 4 doz per week for the 6 "warm" months we have to start to make a profit. Not that I am really looking for a profit as much as not loosing money. If using new cartons is not necessary then making this work becomes much more feasible. My close acquaintances that buy from me based on world of mouth, bring back all their cartons and I just refill them. After I get all the details maybe we will give it a try for a year and see how the figures turn out. It will at least be a fun learning experience and a business lesson for my children :) Maybe even an excuse to expand and get more chickens! Do you have/plan to have a manned stand, sign to inquire within, or an honor system can.

Looking for some quick advice. I think one of my hens may have ended up with coccidiosis. She looked fine when I let them out this evening, and two hours later, she was laying on her side in the middle of the paddock. One wing was stretched out and I thought she may have been attacked. I picked her up and her mouth was hanging open. Am I on the right track with my conclusions? If so, is she too far infected to save? If I decide to cull her, is the meat safe to eat?  Thanks in advance for your help.

Dave

I wouldn't eat anything that I'm not 100% certain of cause of death/illness.

Bravo! Mine are on Day 12. I will start my 2nd bator going this Saturday. We have hatching calendar progression charts on the refrigerator so the kids can keep track of what is happening inside the eggs each day. We candle on Day 7 and 14 and I let the kids try to decide if each are winners, losers, or yokers. If hatching a new breed that we don't currently have on the farm I will also hang a photo of what the chickens will look like on the fridge so this kids learn to identify the breeds by the time they hatch.

currently I advertise on Craigslist and have a sign down by the end of my driveway. Plus friends and family spread the word. You could also talk to some of the health food stores or farm stands about buying x dozen eggs a week. Starting memorial day a berry farm will be buying all our eggs.

Congrats to all the hatchers...Mine are on lockdown due tomorrow night...Pips in the silkies already.

I have some other cool things in the incubator I just set this week too...some mystery eggs from rancher...some of everything from Phoreda...some calls and some muscavoy...going to be such a fun month here

.... Anyone looking for some rare breed mixed chicks? I am selling them off Sunday from the ones I am raising from 11-2 at the farm in Fenner ($5 a chick), I did post a CL ad. Mixes of Sulmtalers/bielefielders/barbezieux/isbar...mix of hona/isbar....mix of English light sussex/sulmtaler/CCL. The parents are all pure mostly from GFF they were just all together for winter. Although there will be some pure EE in there too and there may of course be pures in the sussex and sulmtaler pen.

@Pyxis nice to see you back!
