tOur insurance on the farm is so expensive at first I thought, wow, $100 a year seems like nothing. Then I started to think and I must sell 33 dozen eggs just to pay for the insurance
(at $3/doz). If I was to use new cartons they run about $0.50 each. Cost of running small fridge or making ice daily for freezer chest. I would need to sell about 4 doz per week for the 6 "warm" months we have to start to make a profit. Not that I am really looking for a profit as much as not loosing money. If using new cartons is not necessary then making this work becomes much more feasible. My close acquaintances that buy from me based on world of mouth, bring back all their cartons and I just refill them. After I get all the details maybe we will give it a try for a year and see how the figures turn out. It will at least be a fun learning experience and a business lesson for my childrenMaybe even an excuse to expand and get more chickens! Do you have/plan to have a manned stand, sign to inquire within, or an honor system can.
if you are close to me I can help fill orders.t
I sell eggs through word of mouth, and I've got more requests than I can keep up with. Local friends who also have charms and sell eggs have asked me to fill orders for them here and there too. I'm not worried about regulations....the town supervisor is one of my biggest customers...along with the zoning board...
But, I don't even have a sign up. I only have 17 hens, so until I have a fridge overflowing with eggs putting a sign up isn't necessary.
I reuse cartons - and people who don't buy eggs are bringing me cartons now! A friend from out of town dropped of 60 a few weeks ago!

There honestly is no comparison...and once you have amazing eggs you never want to go back to the store. Yuck!I'm west of Binghamton, so we are about an hour apart.
A teacher at the elementary school (small town) had 200 chickens a few years ago and she pretty much supplied the whole town and got them all hooked on fresh eggs. She had a fox problem, and with growing kids she didn't really have time anymore so she got rid of the birds. People are so excited about eggs! But she had 10X the chickens I do!
Until a few years ago you could even get fresh eggs at the corner store.
It's a good town for selling eggs.
